Good Player to Redshirt?- First time... Topic

I have never redshirted a player before, but I was looking over my team and I have a lot of upperclassmen at C/PF...so this guy wouldn't have gotten much playing time anyway, so I decided to redshirt him. What do you think of the decisision?

Absolutely RS the kid if he'll take it. No sense in him losing a year of eligibility if he's not gonna see any real minutes.

What's his WE? That definitely matters.

29 but I already informed him of redshirt and he didnt like it but signed anyway....I'm not planning on him being a starter but based on his ratings looks like he can alteast be a very productive player off the bench

That's a lower WE than I'd want for a RS player.

RS him anyway.

I am...I think he'll still be a good defensive player reguardless

I haven't used a redshirt in a long while. I'd rather have a kid leave after 4 years when he isn't getting any better anyway and have a new freshmen (year 5) that can improve a lot over that year then have that 5th year senior who is maxed out and not improving.

I think that right there speaks to how flawed FSS is in general when you think that nearly all players aren't getting any better their 3rd and 4th years on campus.

but its another year of someone playing at their top of their game instead of waiting for another to develop. RS still make sense.

I completely disagree with that.

I am not saying that in some instances you might want to redshirt a player I am just stating that in my coaching opinion I would not want a kid taking up space on my roster when he isn't improving. Also to say 'top of his game' that is very misleading because you likely will over recruit this kid anyway with a bit of success and prestige improvement. He has average potential in almost all categories (which means 6-20 improvement points) so I would guess he would improve somewhere around 100 - 120 points (not including sta/dur/we) over his first 2 years or so and see very minimal growth the rest of his career.

While IQ matters I would be more likely to agree with you if you had a guard that you were planning on doing this with but having a big man the added IQ isn't going to be nearly as big of a deal.
