#20 RPI= #7 Seed? Topic

Regular season conf champ, #20 RPI, #25 SOS...8-2 in my last 10.

Maybe the overall 7 losses hurt?

Just trying to figure it out, any help is appreciated.

I'm actually more bummed about having to play a team that already beat me by 30 in the first round, what are they doing as a #10 seed? They got hosed!

That is really not too unexpected of a seed. If you simply went by RPI and nothing else, you would be the last of the 5 seeds, so a 5-6 seed is maybe your best spot. Losing in your conf tourney likely dropped you down one seed. Not really much unexpected.

Winning the CT makes a big difference. I once went from a bubble team to the #3 seed after winning the CT

I've had a 13 rpi (going in to the ct)get an eight seed because I was upset in the first round of the ct. I fell to an 18/19 rpi but that's not all thats considered.

If you just took the seed straight off rpi, you'd be the very last 5 seed. To go from there to a 7 seed is a pretty small jump. WIS definitely overvalues CT performance in NT seeding, so that's part of it. But overall, this isn't a surprising seed.

record is a big factor, when talking about seeding. if you are not taking it into account, you can't get the complete picture.

anyway, if you look at your schedule, i think a 7 seed is pretty reasonable. through conference play and the CT, you have roughly 4 quality wins (none exceptional), and 4 losses to team who are probably not making the tournament, but are not terrible losses. its really not a strong showing for the later part of the season, my guess is that's why you got a little bit worse of a seed than your rpi would suggest.

edit: the guys saying the ct loss is a big factor are definitely right on as well

Interesting, seems like a CT loss has a lot bigger impact than in the real world I suppose.

Playing a tough schedule rewards you for trying to make the tournament, but at the same time can kill your seeding once you're there.

Somewhat awkward if you ask me. The RPI is a good enough system for getting in, but not good enough for seeding the teams.

There are so many other factors that are talked about all the times on these forums and obviously rpi isn't the only way that teams are seeded.

When will stop seeing these topics?

people will never stop complaining. but, seeding is not too logical right now. at a high level, its not bad, but when you really look at it, it could be improved fairly significantly. i think if it was improved, you would see less complaining about it. but, never none. you can never please everybody - and possibly, you may never be able to please even 1 person, if its the wrong person.
