OT- black football coaches Topic

I was surprised to read that there are only 12 black head coaches in the FBS football division.

Charlie Strong-Louisville

Willie Taggart- Western Kentucky

Joker Phillips- Kentucky

Mike London-Virginia

Turner Gill- Kansas

Randy Shannon- Miami (FL)

Larry Parker- Memphis

Ken Numatulolo- Navy

Mike Locksley- New Mexico

DeWayne Walker- New Mexico St.

Ron English- Eastern Michigan

Kevin Sumlin- Houston

The states of Kentucky (3 schools) and New Mexico (2 schools) now have black coaches at every FBS school.

This season, for the first time, 3 black coaches led their teams into a bowl game.

That is more then what I thought. I thought it was more around the lines of 3-5.

You were pretty close accurate. Three of them were just hired last year. Three more will start next season

Ken Numatulolo is actually Hawaiian or a Pacific Islander of some sort if you want to get technical...he's not Al's color lol.

Yeah, I could have sworn on Outside the lines or something a few years back they talked about it when Tyrone or whatever got fired from ND and hired onto Washington. I could have sworn they said there was only a select few coaches and they started talking about racism and such.

So gotta ask then, what is the number you want before it is not an issue anymore?

The whole race thing is just so overworked it seems anymore. I just want it to be done with so everyone can back to what sports are about, who is the best not who is the best white, black, hispanic.

So, you must be for quotas.

It will stop being an issue when qualified minority candidates are not passed over for retread white candidates. Until then it will be an issue and rightfully so.

It will always be an issue in our society...

Retread?

People like hiring, generally, coaches with track records. An unproven black coach is in the same boat as an unproven white coach: Unproven. How, with no track record, are you determining that those minority coaches that are passed over ARE qualified?

If you are a School athletic director, who is under intense pressure to win, are you going to hire someone you know has won before and has a track record you can look at and a name your boosters will recognize. . . or are you going to hire an unknown who might or might not turn out to be good - you don't know because he doesn't have a track record?

I seriously doubt that in 99.99% of cases race has even the SLIGHTEST bit to do with it.

0% black coaches, 100% black coaches...irrelevant. Somebody, somewhere, will have a problem no matter where the percentage lies. Next topic, please.

next topic: the lack of white running backs in the NFL

if Joker Phillips is as timid as a head coach as he was calling plays then he won't be around long.

It may not some day in the distant future but it does now. Color doesn't matter with the soldiers on the field (that's been accepted at this point) but the general still has to be white in a majority of programs due to boosters, fundraising and fan perception. Especially in the South. Come on man be honest with yourself.
