Draft Pitcher Ranking Topic

The usual top of the draft question...I have the number 2 pick so its plausible that the choice will be made for me, but just curious how the opinionated view the choices. I have 20m/20m HS/College scouting, and the guy who has pick #1 has 14m College and 8m HS, so my order is important. All 3 are sign-able with slot money...

I'm leaning towards ranking B #1 with A a close #2 and C a distant #3...Mainly because B will be ready for my rotation within 2 years and helping, while the other 2 will take 4-5 seasons easy...

I'd have A as my #1, but I can see the case for B as well (C is 3rd, IMO). I prefer A to B mainly because B's pitches seem pretty weak. A's got longer to go to hit his projections (so may not reach them), but if he does he at least looks like a true ace to me. B will be very good, a #1 on many teams, but pitches of 76/69/48/38 keep him from being an ace, IMO.

As an aside, your formatting threw me off at first. I'm not really sure why, but it was much harder to glance at the ratings and get an idea of the complete pitcher than it should have been.

Yeah you are right, I should have listed the catagory then the ratings.

I think you have to determine the state of your franchise before making the decision who you prefer. If you have more prospects that are far off as is pitcher A the decision is easy to go with him, but if most of your prospects are nearly ready then you have to make the decision of whether or not pitcher B can make the difference for your team or if you are still better served waiting on pitcher A.

Personally, I always prefer to lean toward the biggest talent and would go with A, you can always trade him next season if you feel you need someone right now, but I couldn't fault someone for going with B in this case.

B's pitches worry me sufficiently that I'd go A-C-B.

B is a distant third for me. He's probably going to end up at around 80/75/75 control and splits and with a top pitch at 75. For the No.2 pick that's awful.

A will be the best pitcher of the bunch, if you can wait for him.

If you need help sooner rather than later, B is my preference (I like pitchers heavy on GB/FB and velocity too).

B's current splits make it look to me like he is being understated. Only 13 and 10 points projected increase seems low to me.

I'd still take A btw.

Short-term I'd take B and long-term I'd take B.

I rank A way above the rest of the guys. 5 pitches over 50, with 3 over 70, good health, dominates ies, good against righties with good control. I think you'll regret it if you take B just because you want a guy in the majors sooner.

B is, imo, the best player, because (1) their projections make them pretty close to each other, and (2) B has the highest likelihood of hitting those projections, and then some.

This guy is a decent comp for B's projections. He's a little better than B, but still-- those are nice numbers in a neutral NL park. This other guy Is maybe a little better comp, and he can pitch some, too.

I think a better, second question is this: Are any of these guys worth the #2 pick? I say, maybe A, not B or C. Don't pass a multiple-MVP bat for a #2 SP.
1/12/2010 2:25 PM
There aren't any bats that compare to any of these 3.
1/12/2010 2:55 PM
I'd go A-C-B. Pitch quality of B isn't great.
