College Basketball and the RPI Topic

Everyone keeps saying RPI is not used much in College Basketball so it should be thrown out here as the end all be all. Well let me just show you the history of the RPI over the last few years.

2008-2009:
Teams missing in top 45: 2 team missed
Teams outside top 45 in: 3 teams in
2007-2008:
Teams missing in top 45: 2 teams missed
Teams outside top 45 in: 5 teams in
2006-2007:
Teams missing in top 45: 5 teams missed
Teams outside top 45 in: 5 teams in
2005-2006:
Teams missing in top 45: 5 teams missed
Teams outside top 45 in: 5 teams in

Trying to go back further became pretty difficult as there was no general list to go off of, also looking back further gets you away from the fact that now a days selection committees look more at RPI than ever, plus in 2005 the home/away weighting was added which allows for more precise ratings.

Basically it comes down to this:
  • Top 60 RPI teams

  • In Top 45 2-5 teams will usually miss

  • Top 45-60 5 teams will usually make it in

  • So in the end you usually only have 5 teams usually getting in not based on the RPI

You guys need to realize that RPI is a pretty big part of selection and when it comes around to march selection this year look at the RPI and you will see that it holds true.

Reserved for WIS HD RPI's

I started trying to get through this but it does seem very tedious so if someone has a little list it would be great.

In Phelan though:
Seems to be Top 50 are getting in usually
17 RPI Top 50 schools (so 49 <) have had their bubble bursts in 21 seasons

Caution: It seems as more conferences get multiple bids there seems to be less high ranked RPI schools missing the tournamnet. I would possibly attribute this to conferences moving up in prestige as teams that are in the bubble burst under 50 seem to disappear later in worlds as opposed to the first 5 years.

Also this would go along with real life as almost exclusively the teams that get in at 45+ RPI is always from the power conferences.

First let me start off by saying that I'm completely fine with RPI being a major component of the WIS tournament selection process, if that's how WIS does it. I know that it's not perfect, and can be abused, but I've always been mostly OK with how my teams are seeded.

That being said, your data only shows that there is a correlation between RPI and NT inclusion for the NCAAs. And correlation is not causation. I personally have no idea if the committee uses RPI or not but it's not surprising at all that two methods (i.e. the committee and RPI) of determining the best team mostly agree.

Agreed, the NCAA has a selection committee, WIS does not. They can make common sense judgement calls that WIS is unable, or unwilling, to undertake, so they use the corralary data to prove causality (when it suits them, when it doesn't they downplay the corralation.)

Correlation or not it ends up with the same end result though.

I think if WIS just had a 6 game maximum road schedule everything would be fine.

Now THAT is a good idea. Even if it was 7 games, that would be nice to avoid some of the manipulative things that occur.

You know what I don't quite get. How often do you guys look at the teams that got in/didn't get in and go wow that team doesn't deserve that big. There's like maybe 1 or 2 teams a season. Just like in real life. However in real life its usually the BCS school that gets in (Arizona last year) over the mid major with lots of wins (San Diego).

More often than not these teams lose first round anyway.

Well ya Tanner if your not top 25 RPI most likely your not making a run anyways, BUT with the effect of money for getting into the NT (more on the D1 level) than something like this will be talked about.

But ya Tanner those last BCS schools are exactly that, the last teams in and usually the first ones out.
