PIT Championship vs. NT Berth Topic

I have a ticket in on this, but am curious as to the consensus out there amongst coaches.

What does a PIT Championship equal in terms of a NT berth with respect to job applications?

For instance, does PIT Championship = 1st Round NT appearance?

I thought I had read somewhere that most people think of it as equal to a 2nd round NT appearance, but something makes me think that is not correct.

Thoughts?

A PIT Final Four is worth about as much as a NT Berth I believe.

I thought a PIT championship = sweet sixteen, or is that wrong? I could be totally off.

I think that is way to high for it to be worth. I hope that isn't right, being #65 shouldn't be nearly as close to being one of the Final 16.

You might be right, zhawks, but we both know that the PIT winner is rarely, if ever, only the 65th best team.

People can make that argument if they want, but they would be wrong. Do you really think that Penn State wasn't as good as Morehead St. last season?

I think the $ you collect is a good proxy for determining the relative value of each.

PIT Championship is 2nd round NT, at very best. Probably closer to 1st round NT than 2nd round.

Yeah I think the Final Four is close to an NT 1st round and it is just a little more then a 1st round NT appearance if you win it but not quite worth an NT win.

I think that's probably underweighting it a bit, but it's not too bad, if that's the case.

My guess is that most NIT champs could win a first round NCAA game, but it's not that big of a deal.

You have to make the NT to win an NT game.

IRL it's generally borderline BCS conference teams that might've snuck in as a 12 ... so while it's possible they might've pulled the 12-5 upset, they're not teams that really deserve that much of a bump.

PI Championship is about equivalent to a good regular season and a 1st round NT loss, ie. a 23-7 team with a 25 RPI losing in the 1st round or a decent regular season and a 2nd round loss, ie., 20-10 team with a 44 RPI losing the 2nd round.

The amount of wins a team has and their post season success are taken into account separately not together as a lump. At 20 wins in a year you get an added bump.

That's not a good argument in the era of automatic berths. You put any NIT winner in a crap conference and they probably would have made it.

Yeah, that's why it's not that big of a deal to me, but I do think that an NIT championship should be worth one NCAA win.
