Partial Tandem rotation Topic

Would it work having a 4 man rotation with spots 3 and 4 being tandem? Or maybe just my 4th spot? My #1 has 24 Dur 79 Sta and my #2 has 26 Dur 85 Sta.

I just dont feel that comfortable with my #3-5 choices at starting pitcher?

You would need to tweak #1 and #2's pitch counts down from what you might normally run them at so that they'll be ready to go every four days. Which means you'll need a little more depth in your bullpen.

What would you set them to? Also how do you figure pitch counts for tandem pitchers? Trying to figure a good rotation for my Jersey League team.

I don't know who originally posted it on these forums to give proper credit, but this has worked for me for 4 man rotations -

If SP DUR 24-26, keep pitch count at or below STA

With DUR 28-30 5 more pitches

With DUR over 30 add another 5 pitches.

Your plan can work, but you may need to tinker with variations until you find the right mix.

In Happy Jack I run a rotation with:

SP1: 15/92 DUR/STA
SP2: 33/77
SP3: 23/75
SP4: 24/82
Tandem 1a: 29/64
Tandem 1b: 24/74
Tandem 2a: 21/73
Tandem 2b: 25/62

SP1 gets no pitch count with a pull rating of 4. Ditto for SP2. Tandems 1 and 3 get PC of 60 with pull of 1, Tandem 2 gets PC 65 with pull 1 and Tandem 4 gets 55 and 1.

I run a 4 man rotation: SP1, SP2, T1a/T1b, T2a/T2b with SP3 and SP4 filling in for the other two starters when they go long games.

So that is a 4-spot rotation with 2 of the spots being tandems. It worked well this past season (I won 101 games) but requires you to check in at least once a day to shuffle some pitchers.

In No Quitters!!! I run a rotation with:

SP1: 24/99
SP2: 29/83
SP3: 26/77
SP4: 19/80
Tandem 1a: 26/71
Tandem 1b: 23/67
Mop-Up: 29/83

SP1 gets no PC with a pull of 3, the others no PC with a pull of 4. Tandem 1a gets 65 PC with a pull of 1 and 1b gets 60 PC with a pull of 1.

So this is kind of a bastardized rotation to maximize the fact that I have 3 really good starters and SP4 is no slouch himself. So the tandems usually run every 4th spot and I shuttle the other guys in whenever possible. So the starters can get a ton of innings and I don't have to rely too much on a suspect bullpen: my starters have combined for 30 complete games so far and still have another 30 games in the season. Mop-up guy sucks but he's only thrown 63 innings so far: he's there in case I need a spot starter and was forced to pick up a few starts when SP1 went down for 15 games.

Hope I gave you some ideas.
