Three point shooter DIII Topic

Just curious what factors coaches think make up a good 3 point shooter. I was interested to see this guy when I was looking at my match-up today.

I never would have thought he would be a good three point shooter. Perhaps the competition has been lacking - he is a freshman with horrible PER and does not know his offense well. It is early I know, and he did have some 0-5 games... but I never would have thought a guy like that would hit 14/28.

But back to the topic - what rating cut offs would you look for in a jr/senior DIII player to have success shooting 3 pointers? I often try to find these guys but it doesn't always work like I hope.

Ball Handling and Athleticism are important for a reliable 3-point shooter

Extremely flukey, he's a guy that shouldn't even be shooting 3s.

Robdoc is right, those ratings are important for 3 point shooting.

I think that guy is shooting so well because Ozark has played some pretty bad teams. If they were playing against solid opponents, there is no way that guy shoots so well.

At least to me, it seems the pair that are most determinative are the combination of ATH and PER< with BH coming in third on three shooting - based on players I have had in the past that shot threes well, at least.

You can't even say his BH and ATH are high though for a D3 guy. He just had the one great game of 4 of 4 from 3pt. Otherwise its been 0 for 4 and/or 1 of 2 for most games, not exactly stellar.

I have a center who has a 45 PER and I was hoping he'd be able hit some 3s... he is 1/16.... I was hoping he'd provide match-up problems. I don't recall his BH at the moment. His Alth is okay though for DIII.

Any hope for this guy in anyone's opinion (as a three point shooter)?

Interesting - I wouldn't have thought BH mattered for a 3 point shooter.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

At PF set to a minus one, you can sometimes get the right player to be more productive than not from the PF position. I have had no success doing so from the center position.

Huh? I would love it every guy on my team with a better than 20 per could take 2.8 3s a game and shoot 50%. 50% from 3 and making more than 1 per game is pretty close to the definition of stellar. Go and look through teams and check how many guys that make at least 1, 3 per game are shooting 50%.

Interesting - because I have played the guy I referenced above at the PF position and set to -1... and he shot 1/16... maybe the BH is too low. I would hope in 'real life' a guy like this would get some set plays for him that would not involve BH.

Maybe I'll try again against inferior opponents and see what happens. Of cousre, in those games I don't usually need him to hit 3s....

It's been established that C with highish per ratings will not shoot nearly as well as their ratings indicate they should no matter where you play them. However PFs are very capable of making some 3s.

i think the answer is actually quite simple
1) poor schedule
2) small sample size

on a couple of the other points brought up,
spd > ath when it comes to 3 point shooting. i am very skeptical it is even close.

i am also very skeptical a C and PF with the same ratings, both with high per, have any difference in capability to hit the 3. im not sure where that is established, having never heard it before, but my guess it is because PFs are much better than Cs in general when it comes to speed and ball handling.

Not the position assigned to the player, but the position they are playing. When I play the same post with perimeter at PF as opposed to playing him at center he hits more threes then he does playign at C.

My designated 3 pointer shooter on squad is Fletcher Wright he's 40.3% from three for his career at rhode island he's 61 ath, 24 speed, 63 def, 54 perimeter, 23bh, 55pass. Well i forgot about Postma who starts 41,6% from three in his career - his ratings are a tad bit better then wright in his career- 37 ath, 42speed, 30 reb, 41d, 67per, 71bh, 64 pass. Wright has 273 3pt shot attempts, postma 320.

I had this guy if I remember correctly 80 per high ath average speed and above average bh
