Rule 5 and Waivers Topic

What happens to a player who has been designated and waived, and on whom waiver claim(s) have been placed, but whose waiver status is still "pending" when the Rule 5 draft occurs, in which he is selected?

Does the waiver claiming team or the Rule 5 drafting team get the player (once his time on the WW is up, of course)? If the same team wins the waiver claim and drafts the player, will he be under Rule 5 restrictions? If he is awarded to the Rule 5 drafting team, does the waiver claiming team get his claim back (pertaining to the seasonal limit of 50 waiver claims)? If he is awarded to the waiver claiming team, does the Rule 5 drafting team still pay $50k?

Thanks.

The world grinds to a halt during the R5 freeze. That would lead one to believe that the R5 supercedes everything else. Except, of course, recent trades.

That is correct in the case of WW claims. I'm not sure what else it could apply to, but that's my only experience.

I take this to mean that:

(A) The R5 team will get the player, and he will be removed from the WW, and

(B) If I both draft him in R5 and win a waiver claim on him, I'll get stuck with R5 restrictions. Or more correctly, there won't be a waiver claim at all, so I'd be better off letting him go to the ww if possible.

I assume I would not get my waiver claim back, not that I intend to use all 50.

Thanks guys.

Yes. You lose your WW claim (both in that you'll have n-1 claims , and you won't get to claim the player), but since the player was likely DFA'd in order to be available in Rule 5, whoever drafts him will get him as a Rule 5er.

Also, Rule 5 is ~11 PM, WW claims are processed the following day at ~3 AM.

To add a question in here, if a player is in the process of being traded (i.e. the trade has been accepted by both franchises but not yet completed) and a Rule 5 player is in that trade, does the player actually end up in the Rule 5, or does the trade go through since it was accepted ahead of time?

He is eligible to be drafted in the R5.

why would a player be waived if he was R5 eligible - ie not on the 40 man roster?

once you DFA him you have a time period to trade or waive him. thusly if you DFA him, he is taken off the 40 and eligible for the rule 5. if then you waive him before roster freeze, he is both eligible for the rule 5 and on the waiver wire.
