So I searched the forum and found some old threads on the topic of redshirting, and I was wondering if any vets would be willing to throw some advice in the direction of a newbie.
I just finished recruiting and got 3 guys to fill my 4 open slots (I'm fine taking a walk-on for now). One of the guys I recruited was a D-II drop down,
Terry Davidson-- most of his skill ratings are in the 30's, but he has 94 work ethic so I expect him to vastly improve upon those numbers by the time he's been on the squad for a year or two.
Now even though I expect him to develop into a solid contributor for me down the road, the fact is I don't have a place for him this year. I don't expect to win a ton of games and even if I did, this guy wouldn't see many minutes with his current ratings. The threads I looked at seemed to indicate that most veterans never (or extremely rarely) use redshirts, but is there any good reason
not to redshirt this guy, assuming he accepts it? I figure I'd rather have him for 2 or 3 years as a very good player, rather than 1 or 2 years if I were to not redshirt him. Even though I didn't make any promises in recruiting, is there a good chance he'd transfer? I know even if he takes a big WE hit, I can just remove the redshirt and return it to normal, so is there any harm in my redshirting this guy?
If anyone could offer an opinion I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
