Festivus wish...new recruiting option Topic

Is a new recruiting option where you can ask for video on a player.

It would be like a cross between Future Stars Scouting and a Scouting Trip. Say for $20 you could ask for video. It would give you no recruiting credit, but it could be used to get similar information to a scouting trip. Sometimes coaches would tell you that they didn't keep any tape, ("Sorry coach, I really didn't think anyone would be interested in Billy, he could really use a basketball scholarship though or he'll never get into college.") or other times they would tell you that if you really want to get to know "his" player, you'll have to come see him for yourself ("Video just doesn't do his skill justice, besides he's out of your league and I'd just be wasting postage.").

But the rest of the time you would get similar info to that of a scouting trip. (Assistant Coach: "I watched the tapes on Billy...can you please have the athletic department get me something bigger than the 13" black and white TV...anyway it looks like their coach didn't really know how conditioning programs work, I think with "our" conditioning program Billy will improve substantially. He also seems to have some room to grow on his outside shot...but as far as blocking his coach called him out on it basicaly every game and he just made no progress over the season, he's just not going to improve.)

That way I could check out four guys in California, without having to buy the whole state. It would still have some risk of not working. If you are in California it still might be a better idea to just buy the whole state, as there could be 100 guys at your level that you would like to get to know. If you are in Oregon it would depend on how many openings you had. If you were in New York, there may be one guy in California who you would like to get info on, but its way to expensive to buy the whole state or to scout the dude.

Actually a pretty good idea.

Im not sure if this is the best way to do it, but there certainly needs to be a less expensive way to scout players than scouting trips and FSS.

Not a good idea. That's just a scouting trip, only better - too much information for too little risk.

Unlike a scouting trip that works 100% of the time, and also gives you some recruiting benefit, (at least in my mind) this would work 75% of the time and would give you no recruiting benefit. So you take a risk that you spend $20 to get nothing.

i like the idea, as long as for that 20 dollars you aren't getting the full picture (no sub potentials). i like the fact that you have to pay serious money to find the guys with high/high potential in key areas.

i would see at as a $50 recruiting tool.

Unless I'm missing something, and I reread it to make sure, I'm not seeing anything different than what a scouting report would give you... but cheaper. Unless you are pulling somone down, the only reason TO do a scouting report is to get that exact kind of information and to get and idea of his IQ's. I guess I can see this as a cheaper way for lower division schools with less cash to scout, but I honestly don't see the benefit. Even if you don't FSS a state with a distant recruit you want, why would you not use a scouting report? If it's a distance-money issue, then you probably can't afford him anyway.

Besides, at $50 (which seem a bit low if it is a flat rate, even with no impact), even saying it gives the same info as a SR, you'd spend at least $150 minimum to get decent info, when most states only cost you an average of, what, $500 and you get all the recruits in the state. Since you cited CA, I'm guessing you've wanted recruits there and couldn't afford the FSS, but that is the cost of doing buisiness in the big states, you either bite the big money for FSS or pay the scouting fees. Recruiting is about money in HD and I understand it sucks to be in some states when it's a down year for that region's pool is shallow, but making a cheaper, flat-rate SR isn't a good idea.

I think we could get enough video from the web. This isn't a bad idea per se, but the $50 (or more expensive)sounds better, and I think perhaps if each video was to request a specific skill to check out. EX. I do 10 scouting trips for a big and can't get the rebounding info I need....

I think the better way to do that is to fix scouting reports. Make them a little more expensive (why is traveling from campus to his high school gym about 1/2 the cost of traveling from campus to his house) but allow you to instruct your asst. coach on what to look for and evaluate.

It's about effort not cost. The $ is silly, look at at it an effort meter. I mean if we really want to talk about silly prices why does it cost me $300 to visit a kid whose house I could walk to.

because if it cost $100 local coaches would be unassailable on high ranked recruits within 10 miles. Again, HD recruiting is all about money. Money means effort and there is a minimum amount of "effort" and that is $300.
