I'm looking for some ideas on how to compare players offensive numbers.

I've used a couple of systems and neither seems to work very well. My latest gave 20% weight to contact, 25% to both power and eye, 5% to speed and then 12.5% to both and right. I've also tried multipling the factors together.

I realize you may not want to give away all your secrets but any help is appreciated. You can site mail me if you like. I've been playing a few years now and don't seem to be getting any better.

Thanks

I'd put more emphasis on splits. I'd also do a weighted average between the splits of roughly 60-65% vs RHP and 35-40% vs LHP.

Most people agree that vR split is twice as important as vL as there are way more righty pitchers than y pitchers. Both splits are more important than contact. I don't have a system for applying weights like you do, but in order, here's how much I value hitting ratings.

1) vR
2) Power
3) eye
----- big drop off ----
4) vL
5) contact
6) speed/baserunning

You'll get a lot of opinions, but I have a feeling most people will agree that vR is more important than vL.

For the math challenged, the formula [(2 x vsR) + vsL]/3 is a simple, rough way to do a weighted average, though it probably undervalues vsL a tiny bit.

I won't give you my supersecret formula but I would suggest having two ratings for each player. One vs LH, one vs. RH. Sometimes it makes no difference, sometimes it does. You'll quit throwing away that 72/48 split player because he can't hit righties. And, because he'll get some AB vs. righties anyway, you might find that he's worth keeping.

Gee, what is the matter with results? You know like BA, OBP AND SAY HR's.

Nothing. But results aren't predictive like ratings are. That's the point right - to predict results?

And besides, to adequately tie results into ratings, you'd need lots data and lots of regression analysis, etc. In the end getting a feel for what the ratings mean is what you're after anyway....

The bottom line is results. If a guy has 20's all across but has a .400 OBP, well , I'll take him.

Thanks for the help guys. I wasn't giving much emphasis to the splits and it looks like I should up the value of that.

Sometimes people trade. So, if I had a hitter with all 20s across the board having what I'd consider a fluke season with .400 OBP, I guess I guess deal him to you for a nice price.

Without looking this player up on one of my teams, tell me what he is hitting by the following ratings:54-97-74-65-77. Average , OBP, and homeruns please.
