This guy was a 2nd round pick that was most likely going to be a career minor leaguer, but what surprised me is that he retired already. anyone ever see someone retire after 1 season?

A promotion to Low A probably would have avoided retirement.

I've never looked carefully for retirements after one season-- but my experience is that the vast majority of 23 year olds in rookie ball retire after that season.

That is a bizzare retirement, but yea, I agree with tec that an end of year promotion to LoA would have stopped it.

He was officially drafted in season 13, played season 14, and was not promoted. The system looks at that as 2 seasons in Rookie league without a promotion. That with his age made for an easy decision by the system.

I do it when each level, if I'm playing, finishes their playoffs. Get the extra AB and move 'em up before rollover. Just so you don't get "surprised".

I wait for my last minor league playoff team to be finished with the playoffs, and then I do my "mass promotion". No player behind!

Plenty of 18-year-olds will retire as well if they're not promoted prior to rollover. Take over a team that didn't promote during the previous season and you shouldn't be surprised to find that 2/3 of your draftees--including first round picks--from the previous year have retired.

I had another oddity happen today. My backup RF/LF who had not played in the teams last 13 games suffered a major shoulder injury. The bad news is he had a good career, the good news is that it was game 21 and I had a player I wanted to promote to the majors and no one to demote. The decision was made for me.
