I think it originated here...a really quality NCAA pool in which you had a certain number of dollars or something to purchase different seeds in the tourney...and then you won/lost on total wins accumulated.

1000 rlahann bucks to anyone who can find/remember the rules.

I've done it before and its worked like this: let's say the buy-in is $50 and 8 people participate (meaning $400 in the pot). You auction off all the teams within the tournament. And teams pay out according to the following:

  • The 32 teams winning first round games get a total of 10% of the money in the pot - each team earns $1.25 if all 32 teams are owned.
  • The 16 teams winning second round games get a total of 12% of the pot - each team earns $3
  • The 8 teams winning third round games get a total of 14% of the pot - each team earns $7
  • The 4 teams winning fourth round games get a total of 17% of the pot - each team gets $17
  • The 2 teams winning final four games get a total of 21% of the pot - each team gets $42
  • The team winning it all gets %26 of the pot - earning $104
  • So if you buy the team that wins it all in the auction you end up getting $174.25 for that team ($1.25 + $3 + $7 + $17 + $42 + $104 = $174.25)
But these numbers are a little off since not every team will end up being owned. You actually have to calculate it after the games but this is the MINIMUM each team would pay out.No team HAS to be bought and any team that doesn't get bought but wins a game (and therefore earns money) has that money returned to the kitty and spread equally across the other teams winning in that round. For example - say only 30 of the 32 teams that win in the first round get bought. The 10% of money allocated to first round winners gets split among the 30 owned teams rather than the 32 teams since two are unowned. Therefore each team gets $1.33 instead of $1.25.

Practically speaking a good way to handle minimizing the unowned teams is to start with the 1 seeds and auction through the 16s. That way you never end up with a bunch of people holding a lot of cash waiting for Kansas to get pulled in a blind draw. The downside is that by the time you get to the 12 seeds people are like...doood, wtf....let's pick up the pace b/c who care who gets Oral Roberts....

Also, if you go from the 1 seeds on down you have the benefit of changing the minimum bid - like 1-3 seeds have a minimum bid of $2, but 12+ have a minimum bid of $0.50.

I'm sure I missed some stuff but that's the gist. Easily the most fun way to manage a tourney competition. Way better than brackets.

there's another game that i think he's talking about...

you get a certain number of dollars... say $100...

Then each seed is valued something...

#1 - $30
#5 - $15
#12- $8
#16- $2

i made up the dollar values, i dont remember exact numbers. but you get the gist....

you can buy as many (like 20 lower seeds), or as few (3 #1 seeds) as you wish. as long as you stay under budget. Then You add up how many wins your teams get.

This is it...but the dollars and seeds seemed really well calculated, and I can't remember what they were.
