How does the sim work re: defense? Topic

I bet he's a y.

Nope, he's a righty.

My question would be: Why do you have him at SS? It's not like he's a stud hitter.

Kind of beside the point. The man does bring up an interesting point. It would seem that the sim does not differentiate. My guess is that RA and AS are combined to create the odds for +/- plays while GL and AA are thrown together to calculate errors with no distinction made between fielding and throwing.

Which I suppose is all good and fine for Infielders, but how does that affect Outfielders? Will a good range and glove help a RF throw out a runner tagging up from third?

I would love to see more examples of this type of player if anyone's got em. (meaning a 2B/CF who you've played extensively at SS)

Speaking of which...

The sim doesn't ever use relay throws for plays at the plate, does it? I can't recall ever seeing it, but I may just not be paying attention.

It may be beside the point at hand but it's a question that needs to be asked. The guy has a career 110-214 and has two losing teams in progress.

To answer his question, I would assume that the player isn't even making throws so he's not getting throwing errors. He makes the stop and knows he can't throw the runnner out. Doesn't explain why he has so many errors though.

The sim does use relays.

Maybe he kicks the ball a little bit, and while a normal SS can recover, he doesn't have the arm strength.

why are we talking about a SS who shouldn't be playing SS? :-)

I tried to stop it at 5:46.

It was an interesting point, unfortunately everyone else got bogged down in why he was playing shortstop...

There are only 9 replies. Only two of us said "Why the hell is he playing SS?"

The data ive looked at shows errors at SS-2B-3B are dependent on glove and arm accuracy. +/- seems to depend on all 4 ratings to varying degrees except at 2B where arm strength is a non factor.

jonas is probably right when he says a normal SS would recover at least some of those bobbles and throw the batter out while this guys AS isn't good enough to compensate for that. I'm not sayinf he is 100% right but it could account for a large number of the E's.
