The Royals just had Danny Duffy, their 8th best prospect according to Baseball America (he's on some top 100 prospect lists), decide to step away from baseball. He pitched in last year's Futures Game during all-star weekend. He was expected to head off to AA ball this year, after having an outside shot at the ML team. The 20 year old had a 2.49 ERA over 3 minor league seasons, and would have been in the majors by next year at the latest.
As a Royals' fan, I'm still holding out hope that he takes some time off and sees how much he misses the game, but from what I have been reading, it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
And for those of you who have complained about minor league retirements, or players whose demands are so high they would sit out rather than head to the minors, here is a real life example of it happening. Sometimes people just lose their desire for the game.
