Post season tourneys were set up this morning in Crum. A couple of things I noticed.

1st - I was under the impression that a team had to finish .500 to earn a PT berth. This impression was based on real-life with the NIT and discussions I have read on the forums from time to time. Well the team listed in the D3 link below goes against that train of thought.

2nd - And this is more of a surprise and I know there are many factors, but I saw a team that I have been following in my world LOSE there CT final game and move up 10 RPI points. I lost my CT final to a team that has a record two games better than this other team and I actually dropped a couple of spots in RPI. I also had about a 20% stronger SOS and had about 5 teams from my schedule playing in the CT final last night. A bit baffling.

You misunderstood. You need a .500 record to play in the NT, but not the PIT.

Interestingly, even the NCAA doesn't have a rule about a .500 record being in the March Madness. Any team is eligible although it's unlikely that a .500 team would have a worthy resume. I got this info directly from Joe Lunardi, ESPN's Mr. Bracketology.

This came up several seasons ago, when my team was 13-14, SOS #1, RPI #34 and was on the 'lock' list. But, when the brackets were announced, I was in the PIT instead of the NT. WIS has a rule about the .500 record for the NT but they had failed to program it into the 'lock' program.

1. There is no official policy with the NIT that you have to be +.500 to get a bid (although I don't believe a -.500 team has ever been invited).

2. I can't believe alblack has ever been below .500 for a season!

A number of things to keep in mind here. First, the RPI ranking is what everybody always refers to as the RPI, not the raw RPI numbers. So it is possible that the team in question was in a cluster of teams that were very close in raw RPI and a small improvement led to a big jump in RPI ranking. It is also possible that some of the teams ahead of them went backwards.

As far as the SOS, the other team having a worse SOS means that there was a bigger potential gain from playing a team with a good record in the CT final.

Having 5 teams in action from your schedule only helps if they win enough games to maintain your current SOS. The better your SOS was to begin with, the more difficult this is.

Simpleton - are you sure about the .500 rule in the NIT? I know that the NIT automatically allows regular season conference winners a berth in case they are from a small conference and don't win their respective tourneys, but I have never seen an NIT "at-large" caditate get in with a < .500 record.

Oh please great god of HD, spare us. To what to we owe thy honor of being able to use the mighty BPI formula?

I thought you need to be at least .500 to make the NIT in real life but it isn't the case. There is no official rule but like simpleton said I don't think any team under .500 has been invited.

If Carolina lost a couple more games we would've seen a team with a sub .500 record make the NIT this season

I am assuming that you can still make the NT in WIS with a sub .500 record if you win the CT. The above rule is only in question for an At Large berth for WIS.
