I claimed a guy off waivers during the WS and then after rollover he was waiting to be assigned. He's arb eligible and I don't want to pay him, I only wanted him as a minor league insurance policy in case my ML guys got hurt.

Since I don't want him I tried to trade him, no takers. So I tried to waive him so I can assign him to AAA, then I realized I'm going to have to pay his arb salary, which is too expensive for a AAA guy, so then I thought I would release him. But it won't let me release him since he's on the waiver wire.

Arb hearings are tomorrow (4/3). How can I get this dude off my roster so I don't have to pay his arb price?

Sounds like you are going to learn from this mistake, and next time you dont want to pay an arb guy you will release him.

If you put this guy on waivers before midnight on the night of 4/1, his waivers should be resolved with the AM cycle on 4/3. If so, then you'll be able to release him before the arb deadline.

Otherwise, as usfbully said, it's live and learn.

That is crap. If I can't assign/promote/trade/release/or designate him then I shouldn't be able to give him a contract either. It's not the worse thing on the world cuz he has value and my top 2 catchers have health in the. 60's.

If a guy is arb-eligible, he's going to get a major league contract. Sounds like you thought you could get away with a minor league contract for him by stashing him in AAA. Hopefully, lesson learned for you.

Yeah, lesson learned. I was trying to sneak him through the backdoor. I made a mistake, but this still doesn't change the fact that it isn't right that you can't make any roster moves to a guy on waivers, but you CAN sign him to a contract... even though you don't want to.

That's the rule. Just because you've been burned by your misunderstanding of the rule, doesn't mean "it isn't right".

You are 100% correct. But just because "that's the rule" doesn't mean it's a good rule.
