We're about to start the season, and I'm trying to figure out exactly how to play my starting Catcher, who has an alright glove and good offensive #s and...a 58 Dur. His defensive backup, who has acceptable platoon numbers vs RHP but terrible vs LHP, has approx 80 Dur.

How many games can I get out of my starter? 100?

Play your starter 100% of the time, until he loses his 100% fatigue level. Then platoon him as your vs LHP guy. If he gets back to 100%, play him regular till he's fatigued again.

At catcher, no way you can get 100 games out of him. I've got a prospect in Low A who currently has 53 durability, and as a DH, he's currently at 91% after 65 games (and that's with some off days). Really I think it depends how you want to use this guy. You might want to make him a y platoon guy and then start him every day in the playoffs (and down the stretch).

Edit: Actually, I take that back. 100 might be doable if you do 2 days on, 1 day off. You may still experience fatigue issues, though.

You can get around 380-400 PA from him.

I use the method outlined above with this guy, and it works pretty good. Marc DeJean

If the backup has "acceptable numbers vs RHP" then you shouldn't have any problem playing him against righties. Make the Loe DUR guy your vs LHP C always with some starts vs RHP thrown in when matchups are favorable. BTW, is 58 DUR his max or will it improve?

Very helpful. Thanks.

And when he starts, try to have your defensive C replace him early, like the 7th inning, when up. Playing 2/3 of each game can have the same effect on fatigue as playing 2/3 of the games for 9 innings..

A guy with 72 DUR can get what? Close to 550 PA probably. He's just a DH.

I think that would be tough. Sparky has a 76 dur, platoons at C, and gets roughly 450 AB's. He hasnt dipped below 100% for me. Ricardo plays 1b with a 76 dur, and he has hit 550 AB's twice, he is normally around 500. My former DH Wayne who has a mid 60's dur hasnt topped 475 ab's in a season.

You can also maximize the number of games he can play for you if you bat him low in the order. I have a CF with 71 DUR. He bats ninth and is often replaced for defense, and he is able to play every day without resting.

I have been platooning two catchers:

vsR - Tim Payton - 71 dur
vsL - J.J. Burns - 50 dur

Less than 20 games in the season and neither one has dipped below 100%. Payton has 400+ PA and Burns has almost 300 PA.

Way more than that, especially as a DH.

Richard Blauser got 563 PAs in his rookie season and he didn't come up until game 23. Year 2 he got 596 and that was with resting him liberally. Last season I decided to play him at anything above 95% and I got almost 650 PAs out of him.

DUR is pretty overrated. It seems like any non-catcher with a DUR over 70 can get 600+ PAs.

Are you sure you are talking about the right player? The player you linked doesnt match up with any of the numbers you described. He got 512 in his first ML season, 538 in his second, 583 in his third (where his production declined, probably because he was playing at lowel stamina %).
4/27/2010 10:26 AM
PAs, not ABs. He drew 51, 58 and 62 walks in those 3 seasons respectively.

And his production didn't really decline. S13 to S14 was the power fix. League-wide OPS went down almost .050.

I also can't prove this, but I don't remember his performance being any better or worse down the stretch when he was playing at 96% as opposed to 100%.
