I have a player eligible for free agency, and the notes say "Let's be honest I'll play for whoever shows me the money" What is the liklihood that I can resign him before he hits the open market.

Is it as simple as just meeting his agents demands?

Secondly can I get away with offering less money and a longer contract?

If you offer him what he wants he will most likely sign. I don't think he will sign if you don't meet his demands.

I assume the same is true of arbitration.

Can't satisfy them with longer term/cheaper deals.

You need to offer them exactly what they want, and then you can extend beyond that. I always throw a team option at the end of a contract where I add additional years.

I've found very few players will accept a team option. And keep in mind that with an option, if you chose to let the player go you are still on the hook for 1/2 his salary. So if you've got an $8M player, you let him go and pay $4M for nothing.

Option buyout was the intended response.

This is what I told philo too.

When it came time to open up FA signing, his message changed to testing FA no matter what. I've never seen it do that...happen maybe because it was the first season in the world?

I've seen that happen.

The engine is broken? Maybe ask Arlen.

To clarify, you've seen it happen on the day after you set budgets? As in, yesterday was budget setting day and he said he'd re-sign. Then today is FA negotiation day and he won't sign no matter what.

I only ask because you are setting your budget based on those messages...and because I haven't ever seen it do that. I've seen it change in between seasons.

If you want an option, offer a mutual. They are much moelikely to take that.

Now you've got me questioning myself. It's possible that it was before/after rollover. I can't be 100% certain. I just know I've said "Dammit! I was counting on him based on that response."

It could be a season one thing too -- There wasn't a previous season for them to say they'd come back then switch...I can't remember to my season 1s, so I thought it might be something about that.
