Actual Home Ballpark and Normalization Topic

Is a player's actual home ballpark factored into the normalization process at all, because I think it should be.

Adrian Gonzalez hit 40 HR last year with Petco as his home ballpark. I just used him in a league, batting third, with a Padres lineup similar to what he had around him last year...with Petco as my home park, he hit 32 HR.

I just don't think a guy who actually put up his numbers at Petco should have those park factors count against him as much as, say, a guy who hit 40 HR with Citizens Bank or new Yankee Stadium as his home park.

i tend to agree it should be, but it is not. put larry walker or todd helton in coors and you get a double bump.

It would take a lot of work to go through every player ever's seasonal history and plot the exact number of PAs they took at their home field and the exact number of PAs they had in each of the different stadiums they visited on the road. Thats the only hiccup I see in that one.

You don't have to work it that specifically.

But when you're normalizing, maybe work in credit for a guy who put up good numbers while playing his home games in a pitchers park and work in penalties for guys who played 81 games in stadiums like Coors

As footballmm said...as it is now, if you use a guy like Gonzalez in Petco, he gets penalized twice (maybe he would have hit 50 in RL in a hitters park) and guys like Walker, Helton, Burks, etc. get a double bonus if you play them in Coors, since their RL numbers were inflated to begin with.

yeah, i agree with booger, to do it perfectly might be difficult. it may suffice to determine the home park and assume half the PA came there and the other half came at neutral parks. i haven't really thought it through, i'm sure there are other problems i haven't thought of.

I wish they were, too... guys who pitched in HR-friendly parks get burnt, too... their real stats, presumably, suffered from pitching in the park, and they get hit again when you stick them in their RL park on a sim team...

on the same token, we know about the "double hits" no matter which direction they point and can draft & set our ballparks accordingly. I just don't see this as too big of an issue.

you're right, not an issue in terms of fairness, just something that, if possible, would be more realistic. just like you could do without adjusting for the league/season a player played, it is still better that they do it.

I find it stranger that guys who pitched in Coors, and put up great numbers, under perform consistently such as Gabe White, and Steve Reed....

You can't really adjust when you're in a twist/franchise/replay type league where your ballpark is mandated.

I have a Dodgers team playing in Dodger Stadium right now, and Kemp, Loney, Martin and Blake are playing like crap, even though their RL numbers came in that stadium.

Oddly enough, Dodger Stadium doesn't seem to be improving my pitching stats much.

This thread got me to thinking. In the mid 90's to about 2003, Coors Field was the holy grail in fantasy baseball. Players that played there could expect a 15 - 20% bump in there roto prices in auction.

I put together a team of pre-humidifier offensive players that played at Coors to see what the bump in stats might be in a Spring League. Cost was $53 million for the offense which me squat for pitching.

I am afraid 10 games might be a too small of a sample size though.
