I've played 101 seasons of HD and this is the first time I've ever had a player become ineligible because of grades. On my IPFW team in IBA, my freshman PG, Zukowsky, had a 2.1 with the mid-term report. He was at 6 minutes of study hall time. I doubled that and jumped it to 12 minutes. His GPA then went down to a 1.9 and is now ineligible. I asked CS on how double the time could lead to a decrease and here is there answer:

"Study hall minutes increase the odds of a good GPA, but they don't necessarily guarantee anything. Sometimes a guy just doesn't make it."

Anyone have anything they've seen? Like I said, 101 seasons played and this is my first GPA ineligibility issue.

Similiar thing here. I went from 8 minutes to 15 and the guy went from a 2.0 mid-term to 1.9 final. I hadn't had a player go from passing to failing with 15. But I guess it happens.

Having similar issues. I'd literally gone dozens of seasons without an ineligible. Last season I had guys on two teams go ineligible (despite a huge spike in SH minutes) and just got a report that I have four guys in trouble, only one of whom is a freshman.

I asked seble and he told me nothing had changed. I guess it's possible, but it doesn't feel like it, and I've talked to several vets who've had similar experiences.

Guys, here's an answer I posted for Cornfused who had the same question (losing a player to grades and asking if they had tweaked the SIM engine) under the heading of AHHHHH!!!.

It happened as well for me at Nazareth back somewhere in mid-season 39 I think. They started playing around with it somewhat, and then went full swing with it in season 40. I was lucky and went heavy on study hall minutes, sometimes in the 20+ minute area and didn't have a guy fail. You use to be able to use the formula of 4.0 - GPA = SH minutes for a Freshman, 3.6 - GPA = SH min for a Soph, 3.2 - GPA = SH for a Junior, and 2.8 - GPA = SH min for a senior. In season 39 I had to switch to 4.0 for everybody (FR, Soph, Jr, & Sr) - GPA = SH minutes, and last season (season 40) while I was still at Nazareth, I had to alter the formula again to 4.0 for everybody - (midterm or final grade/not GPA) = SH minutes, and now this season (season 41) at Shephard in D11 I've had to alter it somewhat slightly again to 4.0 for everybody - (midterm/final grade rounded down to the next even number) + 2 minutes minimum = SH minutes.

I just can't stand the answer of "Sometimes a guy just doesn't make it." It bugs me. If I wanted that answer I could have asked my girlfriend who has never even been on this game.

I wouldn't mind if this was something that was a bit more regular than once in 101 seasons. I've never had a player with more than 10 minutes in study hall and not once had an ineligible.

So you are upset because it DOESN'T happen more often?

If it makes you feel any better ardthomp, I gave a guy 25 minutes of study hall pre-midterms that led to a 1.7 midterm GPA and after increasing the minutes to 40, he ended up with a 1.8. Guessing it doesn't make you feel any better at all but if you've never once given a player more than 10 minutes of study hall before, I'd say you've been lucky to have this be your first player that misses getting a 2.0.

My current rule is that if you don't want the GPA to get worse after midterms, you have to give 10 extra minutes to what you were doing. Anything else is a risk. It's rare to see a drop with 8 but I've had it happen to me more than once and it's happened to folks that have posted in this thread. I'm guessing that 10 isn't the magic number either since "every player is unique". But I've yet to see or hear from others that the GPA went down with an extra 10 minutes. It might not go up with 10 extra minutes but it shouldn't go down.

If it was more regular, then ya, I could accept "Sometimes guys just don't make it."

That isn't an answer.

I will have to try that approach from now on ku. Thanks

I know I always have kind of "extreme" solutions...but what would y'all say if they got rid of/wanted to get rid of academics in HD altogether?

I'd be perfectly fine with that. I've always thought it was ridiculous that study hall had to come out of practice minutes - this is an area where they could become more realistic and improve the game.

I actually wouldn't mind that. But, if you do that, then do ineligible players go away?

this is way to complicated. i use the formula, 0 for everybody. then at midterms, adjust if needed. i have players fail out fairly often but usually its from forgetting to check midterms until people have failed out. but if you stay on top of it, it works pretty well.

i used to use the formula, 10 minutes for fr, 0 for everybody else, and never had a guy fail out that way. but then i got tired of resetting SH at the start and end of every season, so i just it at 0.

I put 5 for everyone and adjust it to 8-10 if needed. rarely have anyone fail, and never have anyone fail that I need on my team.
4/24/2010 12:48 PM
I never put SH minutes before midterm for anyone but Freshmen. Maybe 2 out of 10 upperclassmen will get a 2.3, so why make them all study before midterms are out?
