+ plays vs ++ plays Topic

Why doesn't a player get double credit for a ++ play over a + play in the defensive statistics? In my season opener, I had both my SS and 3B make a ++ play and a player on the oppossition make a + play, yet all 3 show up w/ 1 + play on the season. Seems odd that you'd make the distinction in the play by play, but not in the seasonal statistics.

Both are good plays, and the measurement is for good plays.

Adding 2 to it would probably pollute the measurement. What you probably want is a measurement for great plays (++), good plays (+) and bad plays (-) rather than adding 1 or 2.

isnt the ++ for good glove and a good throw on the same play?? guess not

Every box score has a glossary in it.

According to that, + is for a good play and ++ is for a great play.

OK, then instead of doubling the amount of good plays, is there a stat that I missed for "great" plays?

No.

I hope it at least factors into Gold Gloves. I don't know what their exact formula is but if they want to make it like real like, the "eye test" is obviously a big part of it.

I know in SLB one of them means the fielder robbed a hit and the other means he reduced the number of bases the hitter took on the hit. Any chance it actually means the same thing here but they're not being particularly clear about it?

Certainly a possibility.

In looking over my recent box scores though, I haven't found a single (+) play, so I can't say for certain that it does or does not reduce the number of bases taken.

I have quite a few (++) plays, but every one of them results from the theft of a hit, not holding the guy to fewer bases.

I think every time I've seen a (+) play, it's been on a hit, and I've assumed he managed to keep the batter from getting an extra base when normally he would. A (++) play has always seemed to be on a play where the batter was out.

Burnsy, would you mind linking a box score with a (+) in it?

The (+) plays are much more rare than the (++) plays.

plays are plays...great or good...catch the ball...make your throw...it should be based on stats...who cares how "flashy" a play is...all i want my defense to do is make outs on batted balls...simple as that...

This is what the + v ++ means

a + play indicates that an exceptional defensive play was made holding a hitter to fewer total bases than was expected

a ++ play means an exceptional defensive play was made robbing someone of a hit.
