Realistic Option Rule Topic

This game's option rule has never been real close to the real-life option rule. Here we could drop a player from the 40-man 3 times before he had to pass through waivers. Now, of course, all players dropped from the 40-man have to pass through waivers, which makes the number of options irrelevant.

Wonder why we don't have the real-life rule, where a player on the 40-man can be optioned to the minor leagues 3 times? After that, he must be removed from the 40 to be demoted. I believe a player can be optioned more than once in a single season with that counting as a single option. Any thoughts?

I am not sure what you mean - the current rule is pretty close to the real life rule. If you have a player on the 40-man in the majors than you can demote him if he has options remaining, so options are not irrelevant. The current rule acts just as you think it should.

The one part of the HBD rules that is still incorrect is that a player can start a season on the 40-man in the minors even if he is out of options. In real life, no player without an option can be assigned to a minor league team without passing through waivers.

Yes, cespencer I think you are a little confused. Options count per year, not per time they are sent down. You can bring a guy up/down 5 times in a season and only 1 option will be burned. If a player has options he CAN be demoted to the minors from the 40 man. He cannot be removed from the 40 man without 1st clearing waivers.

I am glad that we can leave a player on the 40 in the minors after his options run out, even if it is "unrealistic", because otherwise filling the AAA roster every season would be that much more difficult and the waiver wire would be that much busier every ST. It's a rare concession to how complex the game already is, and makes the preseason slightly less crazy. Hope they never change it.

I agree with bluegreyjay... having to populate your AAA team shouldn't be a more arduous task than your ML squad.

Making it so that a player has to pass through waivers before he can be removed from the 40 is enough of a juggling act, imho.

Well, it's really only one year(season 5). After S6, they're FA. If they want to fly the coup, they will.

I don't think it would be that much more difficult to manage, and if people wanted to avoid the hassle they could always just sign all 25 of their draftees every year.

You actually use those 24th rounders that are a projected 29 overall? I sign my first 15 picks or so... then raid the tryout campers and wait for impatient managers release draft picks prematurely.

I use them. Whats the difference if there are projected 29s or 40's? If they arent making the majors, it just doesnt matter.

If you don't sign your position players, your world will be one of those "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH POSITION PLAYERS!!! WE NEED A TRAINING CAMP FOR POSITION PLAYERS!!!" worlds. WifS has done just about everything they can to 'tardproof HBD but that's still a problem despite the fact that virtually no one retires unless they've been in LoA for 6 seasons.

Which is how it works in real life - once you're on the 40 man, you can only be in the minors for (any part of) 3 seasons. After that, you'd have to clear waivers and be outrighted to the minors.

Incorrect. 2 or 3 seasons. If they don't get moved up a level a year, they take their baseball and go home.

Do I really need to produce some examples of 6 year pros in LoA? Trust me, WifS reduced retirements in hopes of getting people to STFU about minor league position players.

I've had guys retire on me after two or three seasons. They've received plenty of playing time and in some cases a promotion as well. I guess every player is different though.
