I just signed up for my first season of HBD ever, and I was wondering if anyone on here could give me some tips to success or would consider mentoring me. Thanks for your help

Skim through the WKRP thread in the HBD forums. It's probably out of date in some ways but it will give you a good feel of the game.

Take it slow. Don't sign any big FA contracts in your first season and don't make any trades until at least a 1/3 of the season has been completed. The game is very complex and you have to get a feel for everything.

Move quickly. Sign big FA contracts your first season and make trades as quickly as possible. Its a simple game and you'll pick it up in no time.
