if a Free agent is a Type A, but you don't want to give up the pick to get him, but he is still available 50 games into the season, at what point can you sign him and not lose a pick? when the draft prospects are released?, when the draft happens?

ok that may be true i guess, but if the player will still sign when is it safe to sign and him not give up a draft pick?
