New Ranking System Topic

I know with the Press and how it is and different things this doesn't mean much but the ranking system that is being used now seems pretty weird to start the season. 1 loss and 2 teams in the top 10 move out of the top 25 rankings?

Both #5 who lost to #7 by 15 and #6 who lost to my other team who is #17 by 8 both dropped out of the top 25. Seems kinda wacky to me. I know people say they don't care about these things, but personally the Top 25 rankings are what makes the game fun to play partly.

Gonna get wackier -- we've dropped from #1 to #6 in two games, winning each by around 50. Seems the engine is taking opponent's strength into account more, so the more you beat someone by, the weaker they appear, and the less "credit" you get for your win. This'll even out over the course of a whole season though -- it'll just look rough for a little while at the beginning. And, it should prevent non-BCS teams from rising into the top 10 through the season by feasting on SIMs...

Its comparable to the BCS football ratings and other computer-driven ratings. Until you have several games under your belt, the rankings flucuate wildly. That's why many of the computer systems won't release their rankings until several games into the season. (I think the BCS has their first ranking after game 6 of 7)

Makes sense, although this is D3 so were not talking about any power conferences except maybe 1 or 2 with full leagues.

Also, just a thought but maybe we should use the old ranking system up until week 5 and then start meshing them until you get the new ranking around week 9/10. This would eliminate this screwy start to the season with the new ranking.

With the old system, 'proven' programs had to lose 2 or 3 consecutive games in order to drop out of the Top 25. A 'new' power could be 20-2 before they were ever ranked. Even with your meshing idea, you're still going to hear, "When I went to bed I was #1. I woke up, after winning another game, and I'm #5!??!" LOL

The new rankings have got to be an improvement. It's only been a few days. I'm sure they'll work out OK

There's going to be volatility regardless as long as a system is computer-generated and not voted on. In a few days, I'm sure it'll settle down.

Just thought I would share my bizarre result.

We were ranked #8 going into the season and won our opening game 93-43 and promptly dropped down to #20.

I am pretty certain that had I my starters in and we won by 60 instead of 50, we could have dropped totally out of the Top 25.

I think seble said that the rankings would be jacked up to start each season but the point is to get them to where they should be by the time the tourny rolls around. We'll see if it works out that way, but I like the theory.

Ya winning by 50 points and dropping 20+ rankings spots would be pretty frustrating. I think the new ranking system is going to take on an RPI style feature almost, this would explain the up and down extremes at the start of the season.

Yeah i just want to wait and see when tourney time rolls around since that's all that really matters.

For what it's worth, I was ranked #11 and then lost to the #6 ranked team and dropped completely out of the top 25
