Rookie for LF...Which one? Topic

Over my first two years in Capra I've made the playoffs both years (or am about to this year...+4 games...7 games to play). I've done it with pitching and fielding, basically.

I think I led the league in fielding last year...am .001 % behind this year. I think I have allowed the fewest runs each year. My offense is nothing to be too excited about. Next to last...or 3rd to last in runs scored.

My LF the past two years has been Wes Steele

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=641385

He had a pretty good year last year (.821 OPS) and is a good glove. But he's aging and his production fell off this year. he was dismal, in fact, until the last 40 games or so...then he got hot. I havehim contracted for one more year...but for only $1M, so I could cut him and not lose much.

I have two interesting rookies. Both have some pop, in different ways. I think I will install one as LF next year and try to add to my offense.

Josias Terrero

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3151001

He hit almost 90 x-tra base hits in about 130 AA/AAA games this year. Can field a bit....(projects to 2B/CF numbers here...not sure he'll quite get there).

His offensive numbers project to 31-74-81-75-76 (his speed is 97)...he's almost there on most of them..has xome growth vR. Only 2 years of ball, but I like him.

Wilfredo Hernandez

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2931507

He doesn't field too well (would be a passable LF..that's all. I think I would use him at 1B a bit, too...would be a slick fielding 1B).

Projects to 50-83-59-51-87. He's close...will be over 80 next year, I think, in power and eye. (well maybe 79 power). He's only 20 right now...21 next year.

both are really healthy and really durable.

So..who would you put in LF next year???? I think I will not worry about the extra season before arb and move one up to begin with next year...may move the other up a bit later.

Edit...Terrero has a 52 Makeup...projects to 58. Hernandez is now 96, projects to 100

thanks....

I'd put Hernandez because he's the best hitter. I know your team is built on pitching and defense but you've got to score runs somehow, and LF (one of the positions that requires little fielding acumen) is a great place to stick a good bat regardless of glove. So that's what I would do.

I'd go with Terrero. I like him better than Hernandez.

and I like hernandez more than Steele. I was also looking over your team and it looks like you have some guys in the minors that look pretty good for the majors like:

Not sure what your gameplan is, but they would be a good fit in a COF.

Thanks guys.

rcktchamp...of the other guys you linked, Durocher was my CF a year ago. Was up part of this year then I sent him down. Career #'s in MLB are about .700 OPS and .390 slg %. About 700 games. He's expensive..I think I'll cut him.

Cabrera had one MLB season....4 seasons ago. 730ish OPS, slugged 405. 12 homers. I think I'll cut him, too.

Cabrera is also 26 now. I could see him hitting about .310 if he has a good season. I think he is better than all three of the guys you linked

Cabrera ia a bum moe. I think you should cut him right away,
6/13/2010 7:38 PM
Cabrera's one year he hit .280..but I don't think he walks enough, mashes enough, or plays enough defense to start in LF. I've considered him as a right handed bench bat who could backup 1B and LF...but I think he's gong to go. he's a very nice AAA bat, however.

i think he is also a very nice ML bat too. With what I think are solid ratings (except his eye) across the board hitting wise, I don't think you should cut him after only one season. And its not like he hit bad. He hit .280 2 seasons ago. Over these two seasons he has grown a little so I wouldn't be suprised if that .280 batting average went up.

You could also platoon the two, batting Cabrera against righties and Crash against ies. If you do that, I think both of their averages will go up. Also Crash is a gold glove OF with speed. Can't go wrong with that.

Crash would be an excellent fielding LF. But over the last 4 years his batting performance against ies has been:

Year 16 31 PA's .097-.222-.194 Year 15 172 PA's .233-.294-.372 Year 14 139 PA's .245-.318-.381 Year 13 101 PA's .297-.372-.446

Minus 4 seasons back, he has been pretty scraggly against LHers

Cabrera hit .297-.339-.430 agains RHers in his one MLB season. OPS of .769..he's basically Wes Steele with the bat, but not the fielder Steele is.

But if you have an available nice reliever...I'll send them both your way! :)

Your team, your choices- good luck!

I have a hard time imagining you wouldn't be able to find a better bat than any of those guys on waivers, or languishing on somebody else's AAA team.

Not sure why you kept Steele as your starting LF for 2 years. LF is a production position. This guy had 38-40 RBIs and K'd near 90 times. As antonsirius said, I can't believe it would be very difficult to find a guy who could put up way better numbers than that.

torrone,

He was my lead off hitter a year ago and batted 2nd this year.  He also should be the Gold Glove LF this year.  Last year he hit .291 and had an OPB of .383 AND was a great fielder.  That's not a bad lead off hitter.  If his OPB had stayed at the .380 level I think I would keep him for another year.  But I am trying to upgrade offensively.  that's why I asked about the two guys above.  Hernandez has power (but only a decent fielder).  Terrero has tremendous speed, is going to be a great fielding LF (perhaps a 2B/CF).  Which of those two guys would you use?
