Recruiting Question(s) Topic

1) I have signed the three guys I intended to sign (for 4 open scholarships) and have $3,185 remaining. Anything I should do with that money? If it is lost if un-used, would it make sense to toss towards a JuCo who won't sign with me this year, in case he is "on the market" again next year?

2) I got this message from the AD -

Let me be the first one to say congratulations - oh, wait, that's what I'd say if I were happy. Let me rephrase that - you signed Don Watanabe?!? Are you insane? The kid's mental.

Is this something that is going to be a problem, or is it from before my time when there were ethical issues or whatever?

i don't know what i would do with the 3k. if there was a 1yr transfer you could get cheap that would be good.

on 2) there is no problem. that is just window dressing.

I would suggest you look to sign another, you have enough cash to do it. You need a rebounder badly, there are only 2 guys on your team who can rebound at all.

I can't see the ratings for your recruits, but 2 SG and a SF doesn't sound like you picked up a rebounder.

a)  its not totally lost if unused,  but you do lose 75% of it
b) i am assuming you are D3?  take a look around.  i dont know what its like these days, but i used to find decent players that were kind of leftover at the end.
c)  to answer your question about trying to make an investment in a juco towards next season.. i have heard guys pondering that before, but i dont think ive ever really seen that pulled off intentionally. not sayig it has never been done,  buti dont think it works out quite as easy as you would think.

I am a little confused... I'll attempt to answer it though. If you don't sign anyone else (not sure why you wouldn't? You got the cash) then you lose it all. The only way you keep a small % of it is if you fill all your scholarships, not just 3 out of the 4. As for the Juco thing, what do you mean? If hes out there and you got a roster spot there is no reason he won't sign. I would attempt to sign a 4 year player if I could with that money. You got enough to possible steal a local recruit. The left overs may not be great, so if there is nobody decent left for a C- prestige then look for a transfer who would just be a role player for a season or 2. If none of those are in your range, then I guess just accept a walk on. No point signing someone just to sign someone and have him be a mop up for 4 years unless you cut him and take the hit.

sorry for confusing things..its been a while since i took a walkon and forgot you had to sign 12 if you want to keep some carryover cash.

My rationale is as follows - When I took over last season, there were only 3 scholarship players returning. I recruited a max freshman class (6) and one 1-year transfer. There are two AI recruited players who will be juniors this year that I could do without, but didn't want to rescind any scholarships and take even a small hit to reputation. As things stand, I have zero seniors this season, so planned on taking a walk on to see if I could concentrate on filling the one scholarship spot next season.

I do desperately need a rebounder, and if there was one out there - 4 year player or not - I'd have gone hard after him. The one I was considering was a transfer, but a DII school (I am DIII) swooped in and is already being "considered". Is there any chance that I could steal him away? I'm under the impression that there isn't, but if there's even a chance I could toss the 3k his way and see if I get lucky.

I thought perhaps try to build some good will towards a JuCo because there are a couple with 3 years of eligibility left who could help me. Unfortunately, because I recruited a freshman class of 6 last year, those 3-year guys would put me at a class of 7 for this season (not allowed). I am red-shirting one of my 6 (now) sophomores though, so if the guy is still JuCo next year and I built up some good will, I thought I might be able to fill my last scholarship spot with him (next season).

And, with respect to the final scholarship spot, I don't want to fill it with just a body who won't be able to contribute but who would eat a scholarship for the next four years (I already have enough dead weight on the roster). I'd rather take a walk-on this one season and see if I can't get someone who can contribute next season. I'd love to sign a 1-year guy, but the only ones available seem to be DI projected guys, and I sort of just assumed there was no way to pull any of them down (assuming no other school was interested) two levels to DIII. Am I wrong on that?

Well, if you are taking a walk on you lose all the money. May as well try to battle for that transfer and see what happens. If you lose, you end up in the same boat as if you sat and did nothing (walk on, no money)

I agree don't just sign someone to sign someone. But at the same time you do have a lot of money for div III this late in recruiting. With no risks you could go hard after 1 player and hope for the best.

I did just find a DII guy I had overlooked (probably because he is over 1000 miles away) with one year of eligibility left who would help me on the glass. He's not considering anyone yet, but is $3k nearly enough to pull someone down from so far away? I have a telephone call out to him now, and he may tell me to go fly a kite, but if I get some version of the "backup" message from him, think he might be convinced to come?

EDIT - And the transfer who was considering another school just signed with them.

Does this message really mean that there is NOTHING I can do? If there's even a small chance I'm just going to toss my last $2k+ at the kid; he's not considering anyone else just yet.

"A simple letter isn't going to change my mind. I am not interested in Hamline. To be honest, a complex letter wouldn't do it either. In fact there is NOTHING you can do to get me to play at Hamline - not now, or ever."

Sounds hopeless to me.  Don't spend anymore money on him

If your out of money, can you use booter help to get a player?  I figured on the scouting reports it said 1) he got his stomach pumped and 2) he is what the kids call "a playa"  I was thinking that a stereo and 15K might help him get drunk and laid.......
