Number of schools per state Topic

Does anybody know how many D1, D2, and D3 schools are in each state? Is there a list somewhere, or will I have to just count them myself by conference?

Just curious as to why you care?

It could be helpful in deciding which school to select as a coach. I don't think it's as pronounced here in hoops dynasty, but in Gridiron dynasty there are a handful of schools have have a inherent recruiting advantage (which has been proven across worlds and many seasons) because they are the only schools in their specific region. This probably doesn't have a big effect once you get to DI and has a smaller effect on DII, but I could see it playing a role in DIII where money is really limited. If you're the only school within 300 miles of another school, you have a pretty decent advantage over other schools trying to come into that state and grabbing the recruits, as opposed to say if you were in the NE with tons of tiny DIII schools all fighting over the same recruits.

But there's also a smaller number of recruits.  It's not that simple...

without a doubt, but not having to fight off 3 or 4 other schools who all have the same distance advantage as you is clearly better than going up against 1 school where you have the distance advantage, particularly if you're at a prestige disadvantage. I was merely offering a reason why I thought the guy would want to know the number of schools in a state and not trying to give a definitive answer by all means.

What you need to look for is an area with 1 DIII school where there are also several DII schools. The recruits generated for the DII schools are great dropdown/pull downs for the DIII school.

Notch was right, I was wondering if there was an area with a slight recruiting advantage like he described

+1 - You should always look at areas where there are lots of schools above you, since those are the recruits you should be targeting.

Thanks, but to clear things up I'm looking for a D2 job, so you say I should look for the number of D1 schools in the area?

yes - find an area with a couple or more DI teams, then look to see how many DII teams are in that same area.  as stated, you will possibly have more battles, but you will also be closer to more recruits.

There's no list...I once counted the D2 and D3 schools but I'm not sure if I retained the list.

And some of it is just personal preference. I know those who subscribe the notchflawian philosophy of wanting to be the big fish in the smaller pond, and others that take a more glen87ish approach. Lots of different ways to get it done.

Ok thanks everybody, it's nice to hear different strategies from some great coaches

I think it certainly pays to research school geographical spreads(sim v. human, division v. division, prestige based) in your world before recruiting... knowing where to look can spell the difference between battling 20 other schools for the best recruits in one state and recruiting virtually unopposed in another. Of course this probably means recruiting longer distances which does have it's risks at lower levels.

FYI here is map of all the D3 school locations that somebody made for GD:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=113161989256958002320.000441f5d3b75819a862b&z=3

Some of the schools are different for HD, but it's a good starting point for research.

p.s.. hit the "next" button at the bottom of the list, half  of the schools are on the 2nd map

That map does a good job of illustrating a point.  I find recruiting much harder in PA and Connecticut than I did in Oregon.  The simple reason was that 3 coaches fighting over 12 guys is easier than 30 coaches fighting over 80 guys.
