Which is more important?  Average $$ per year of a contract, or total dollar amount?

Which is most likely to get a free agent to sign?  A 3 year package of 21 mill (7 / year average) or a 5 year deal at 30 mill (6 / year avg.)?

More money wins every time. Ask any agent. The latter.

Might be the way it is -- but it does not make sense.  Which do you think would be most likely accepted in real life by a 30 year old player?  2 years at 10 million a year, or five years at 4.1 mill a year?

Actually in baseball I bet the 30 year player takes the 5 year deal.  The money is gaurenteed, so he can retire or get worse at any time and he still gets paid.  If he took the 2 year deal his value isnt going up at 32 vs. 30.

Most at 32 can sign a league minimum deal.  But change the age to 27, same principle applies.   In the extreme, it seems like the system is geared that a free agent would prefer 20,000,001 over five years than 20,000,000 over one year.
