Can a starter succeed with 47 control? Topic

I have a 23 year old AAA starter  who projects to 80-47-61-84 and pitches of 80 and 81.  He's close so I expect he'll get there or miss by a bit.

can a MLB starter succeed with 47 control if he has an 84 vR split and two pitches above 80?

Success is a relative term...but anyway check out this guy and that should answer your question:

Pasqual Sanchez

I think he would be better with some velocity so the guys he walks can't advance as often.  Also helps to have a catcher with a cannon arm if you are going to use a guy like this.   I'd say add 1 to 2 runs per game because of the extra baseunners.

Yes.

The biggest problem your going to have is inconsistency.  It will drive you nuts.  Some years he will be average, some years he will be great and some just horrible.  Look at Sanchez as a good example.

Yes.
This is the correct answer.   If he has acceptable splits/pitches, and you put a good defense behind a 47 control pitcher, he'll be fine.  D is a little more important than usual because he will walk himself into trouble.   You can't have a D turning that into runs with errors and negative plays.

Thanks guys!

If my Tomas Borbon can have a career like bigparb's Perez that would be just ducky!
