What is the bench coach good for, and what sort of ratings are important?

What sort of ratings are important for 1st and 3rd base coaches?

BC affects the entire BL team.    And he takes over as manager if you get booted.

I look for BR from my base coaches.

base coaches also have some affect on hitting development, so if you need a tie breaker, look at their hitting IQ

So you are saying that if a bench coach has high hitting he improves hitting in addition to the hitting coach? What improves fielding at the minor league level? What does strategy do?

Yes.  
A good BL FI. 
That's for when you get booted.   You won't even know if you have a good one but the moves he makes if he sucks will leave you saying "Damn, I need a more strategic BC!"

What does a * mean after a coaches name? 

Also, what are patience and discipline good for? I assume they are good for young players development?
