Third on Depth Chart, wont take RS Topic

So, I come in as the new coach at Kansas and there is this kid who is sitting third on the depth chart at SF - he's got a bunch of talent - in fact he started last season ahead of kids who were senior to him - but I bet the old coach promised him that to get him to come.

Anyhow, he is a SO, sitting behind a SR and a JR.....and he wont take a redshirt....if he would, he could do great things in the next couple of years....

Maybe Stout will take the redshirt, Lerch and Houchin look to be the better players to me a little with their Ath advantage.  I would check and see if he would take it, I haven't had it work for a while, but in the past taking over a new school i have gotten Sr.'s to take  a redshirt, it depended on their personality.

Sometimes removing the player from the depth chart and continuing to offer the red shirt during the season works. Of course you risk him getting po'd and leaving your team.

I've never had much success trying to RS a sophomore.

my very first season i was able to redshirt a jr guard....he would have been #4 on the depth chart behind 2 srs and another jr and he took it no problem.

thinking it would be so easy every time i tried for 2 years to get another non-freshman to take a redshirt, and he never would.

so being my vindictive self, i sat his butt on the bench and tried to make him quit.  that didn't work either!

just leave him off the depth chart entirely and he won't play. If he won't take the redshirt let him keep practicing every day and then just apply the redshirt last day of season. Won't matter if he ******* - his WE will be back to normal next season, and there aren't enough practices left for it to hurt anything...

play him some minutes at SF and PF, he should be able to play both, mix him up between second and third on those depth charts, etc. you got a lemon who will never max out because of his terrible work ethic, all you can do is play him as much as possible as soon as possible. i'd definitely start him his junior year, try to get him 10-12 minutes this year in some backup capacities.
