Shepard Tracking Topic

I like reading the other tracking threads, and I'm thinking this may force me to be a more active owner... so here we go.

I moved up to DII by accident, I liked my knox team, but i've decided to embrase the Shepard team as my own.

Here is the current roster.

Just know I dropped a SG who was OK allaround, but not great at anything. He was 532 overall as a sophomore, and I decided I'd rather recruit guys I know that go with the last owner. So I've got 12k to fill 3 spots.

I'm looking for 2 SGs... a juco or transfer to add depth, and a freshmen with really high potential.
I'm also obviously looking for a PG. I'm looking for one who can do it all, but mostly passing, ballhandling and defense.
If I have a chance I'm going to drop basnight for a PF/C with high potential I can call my own. basnight is not a bad player, but i want to have a little youth in the frontcourt and even out the classes some. Might be hard to do with only 12K.

When it comes to the current team I can tell my strengths are at PF and SF. I also have a pretty good C. I like my Junior SG too. my weakness is obviously at PG. But I don't expect much from there except not to turn it over.

The team went 14-14 last year, but I'm thinking it could have been the old coach and bad luck. I'm seeing some sort of tourney experience for this team this season, hoping for NT, expect PI. Gonna be playing a lot of inside out ball, lots of inside shots, hopefully lots of drawn fouls as well. The team runs a triangle/zone. I've never run either. I'm a motion press fan. I'm gonna give the triangle/zone a chance and see how it goes. But if I can't get a handle on the distro/defense i may make a midseason switch because I see season 2 with shepard to be a rebuilding year due to gradauations.

How do you accidentally move up to D2...that's what I find most intriguing lol.
10/1/2010 6:14 PM
i applied for a job and had second thoughts. I thought I had removed the application, but alas, i login one day and boom, i'm at DII..
10/1/2010 8:04 PM

so recruiting is over. I was able to get 3 guards, but did not get the big man I wanted. I also had to go to my second option at PG. I think I'd give myself a b- or a c+ for the year. neither of my recruits were dropdowns, which is bad as well.

so here we go. At PG, 5 foot 9, 165 pound ronald baker. He will never be the fastest on the court, but he should be able to shoot and pass pretty well. He's going to be a backup most of his career behind sullivan. That is of course assuming sullivan has any sort of potential. If baker gains quickly and sullivan doesn't he might take over. But if he does become a starter, it says something bad about the PG position on my team.

My second freshmen this year, 6 foot 189 pound Joe Hatch. With a WE of almost 70 i expect him to develop quickly, and be ready to get meaningful minutes by his sophomore year. He has HIGH pot in all the good places. give him 2 years and he could become a very good outside shooter. Won't ever do much inside, but he doesn't need to be.

The reason Hatch will have plenty of time to develop this season - Charles Talbot. He's a senior transfer from a DI program. Potential doesn't matter much, seeing he's a senior. He should play a good backup this year, and give me a scholly next year to play with next offseason. He's got decent defense and shooting and BH/P attributes. He'll play 10 minutes a game, maybe 15. Alley will start, talbot will be the backup. Hatch will simply develop and learn.

I won my first two exhibition games as expected.... Here is my full roster as the regular season begins. I'm ranked 7th preseason. I've never been that high before, so it will be new. Luckily during the preseason I should have an easy enough schedule to figure out the team.

One game down - 1 win. I'm actually a little amazed i only won by 10. Not going to argue though. Favorite thing i saw was rebounding. Harman is a beast, but we still got ours as a team.

just  finished the conference tourney, lost in the second round.... so far most of my goals have been realized. I won the division (the game called it a conference championship - but i'm pretty sure teams in the north beat me).

Anyway - here's the update.

an addition to the last update. I do not expect to make the NT. I simply lost 2-3 games i should have won, and that's the difference.

But I should make the PI, and if I can get past the first round there i'll be very happy.

As for my players. Happy with the progress of Baker and hatch. Looks like sullivan is maxed out in the important stats, i was worried about that. Arrington improved nicely, as did Beamon. Both will start next year (barring a promise to someone). Apel looks like he can handle being the starter as well.

Basnight said he's going to leave because of a lack of PT. He's only getting about 5 mins a game, so I can't say i blame him. but that means I'm going to have 5 spots to fill next year. I'll go SG, SF, PF, C and a best available (redshirt hopefully).

So i was going to post an update with my 4 recruits and their potential - but I waited too long.
I got 3 of the 4 guys I wanted (the 4th was taken by a DI team).

here is my team as it starts the season. Obisouly losing Hazzard and Adams is a big, but I think I can get enough scoring out of Apel and Alley to win games.

I am redshirting grier - he's high potential in everything except for Speed and Athleticism. I'm getting a redshirt year can add 30-40 points to his overall. He'ss be a decent 4 next year when he's pressed to play a lot of minutes. He'll be a very good player by his RSsophomore and junior years.

Cespedes has either high or average potential in every category except for passing. I see him as a 3-4 type player. He's going to backup at the 3 and 4 this year, and should be starting at one of the positions next year. By his senior year he should be a beast.

Lanier is taking over for hatch as the primary backup at SG. he doesn't have a ton of potential, but he can score. I expect him to make gains at passing, defense, BH and speed. He's going to be a damn good scorer and #2 guard by his senior year.

Harris is the last freshmen. he's backup up at the 5 this year. He could take over as early as next year (depends if I play Beamon at the 4 or 5). He's a stereotypical 5. he's got high potential in rebounding, defense, and LP, and BH. I expect him to do 5-10 minutes this year, rebound, pound the paint. He'll be a good scorer and rebounder later in his career, as long i keep my expectations in check i'll be very happy.

I'm giving this recruiting class a B. I got the positions I needed if you count cespedes or grier as a SF (which i do, just won't be able to decide which one until a year of growth). Next year it going to be another 4 man class, 1 of which will be redshirted. Next year's class will be a PG, SF, and 2 bigmen (at least 1 pure center).

Baker is taking over for sullivan at the starting spot. He's better in every core category except Ath and Speed. With all the scoring I lost I need the primary ballhandler to be able to score as well, Baker does that. Sullivan will backup.

Not much needs to be said about arrington, alley, apel, beamon and basnight. They are who they are, they're not going to improve a ton, but should be solid. Alley and Apel could both by first or second team players if used right. Alley was last year as the 3rd option on the team.

Expectations for the year. We added some new human coaches (yay) to the conference. My OOC schedule is easier than the year before though. I'm expecting another PI appearance, and I don't see why that isn't possible. I want 7-8 wins in OOC, and 10 more in conference. that's 18. If I win 1-2 in the conference tourney i'm at 19-20 and should make the PI. I have obvious weaknesses inside (especially with scoring), but I should have enough to compliment alley, apel, and baker. We'll see how I do.

Wish me luck.
