Would anyone  care to chime in and discuss how they set up for the amatuer draft? Such as weight, conservative, and  Specifically  how many positions does a manager target in one draft or how they get what they intinded to get after the draft.

2 for C 1 for all the rest of the positions, 6 sp,  3 rp and 7 any.  I leave all weights and player types at "0" and "none".  Always go "Very Conservative" in the supplemental round, and how I set my other signing risk levels usually  depends on how much prospect cash I have or am willing to blow.  This method requires a great deal of manually ranking to get the players that you like ahead of the many that you won't like at all.  I sometimes use the formula builder, but always do a great deal of manual ranking afterwards if I do.  I try to rank up to the first hundred or so, if I have good draft scouting.  If I don't I'll rank the first 60-70

Very conservative first five rounds.  No reason to take a guy that isn't going to sign, or demand a huge bonus.  Sure you'll get a Type D pick if he doesnt sign, but why waste your time?  I want guys that will play every day, right away.

I try to get 5 SP, 5 Rp, 2 each of 2B,3B, SS, CF, RF, 1DH and 4 any.  Usually, some DHs can make excellent catchers, just switch their positions after the draft.  I try to manually rank just like shobob does.

Look for what position in short supply that draft & over rank that position.

& don't go conservative with your picks after the first round.  Why not take a risk with those picks?  If they sign, you might land a future MLer.  If they don't you haven't lost anything much.

I don't like the very conservative in rounds 1-5 unless I'm tight on prospect cash, I want a shot at the best players available in these rounds are these are guys that actually have a chance to reach the majors or be a AAAA throw in.  I may move the "will not sign" off the list, but you're not likely to get many major leaguers past the first 3-5 rounds of any draft.  After round 5, I set things to very conservative.  I figure none of these guys will make the show, so I don't want to pay a premium for their services.  Some nice minor league roster fill for cheap?  no problem, a guy in the 10th round that's demanding 6 mil?  Why waste my time, so I'm not even going to get my draft selecter a chance to pick him.

I've found a draft formula that works more or less for me, but I'll always go back thru and rank the top 50-100 kids over several days depending on how much cash I have in my scouting buget.

- I typically set targets for Catcher (2), SP (5), and RP (5), CF (1), and Any for (12).
- I then manually rank as many players as I feel makes sense for that draft (usually between 50-100)
- Round 1 and the Supplemental round are almost always Very Conservative or Conservative (only if theres a player that Id really want to grab who is undecided).  I want my first rounders to sign and play asap.
- Round 2-5 will usually be aggressive.  The off chance that a legitimate 1st round talent drops into the second round is slim, but its worth the risk.
- Rounds 6-25 I generally set at Very Conservative.  You're not getting quality players at this point, you're just getting organizational filler.  No need to overpay.

It depends on the draft class.  In one world, I had the 2nd overall pick and saw the best pitching prospect I've ever seen in HBD.  Problem was he was a "Probably won't sign."  It was my first season in the league, so I had 14MM in college scouting.  I set him at the top of my list, set my signability setting to "Aggressive" and drafted him.  He ended up not signing, but now I have the 3rd overall pick with 18MM in college scouting.  And had he signed, he would have been the best pitcher in the league for about 8 straight seasons once he developed.

Like anything else in HBD, there are few absolutes to play by.
