Playoff Roster Topic

I should know this but I just can't remember.  It is late, late in a season (past roster expansion) and I am considering a deal to pick up a quality RP for the playoffs.  My question is:  Does he have to be on MY 40-man roster before roster expansion in order to get on my playoff roster?  Or it is enough that he was on someone else's 40-man roster?
