Assuming you'd get either job if no one else applied, does anyone know how the decision is made as to which school you'd end up at?

my guess is that you'd get the school with worse prestige because the schools with better prestige tend to take longer to decide if i recall.  if equal prestige, then probably random.

In my limited experience with this scenario (4-5 times probably), I've always gotten the school to which I applied to first. Not sure if it's designed that way, or just random luck on my part, but I now make a point of applying to my top choice first.

Thanks everyone...and by the way Proff, I see youve decided to dominated Phelan since the good ol days of the Big 10.  Im trying to get back but because of the 6 win season in the year the new engine was rolled out, Im having trouble finding the right job...thinking of taking on a rebuild in the Mountain West!
