New to HD...Questions. Topic

I have been a long time WIS player and I started my first HD team. World Allen-Linfield-OR.

I have  a few questions if anyone would mind answering. Any obvious tips would be welcomed.

1-Recruiting started about 4 hours ago. I noticed zero humans considering players that I have on my watch list. Is that normal? In GD after 1 cycle the lists are full with human coached teams considering players.

2-As a D3 team can I recruit D2 players? There is hardly any D3 recruits on my search list. Do I need to wait for the player to drop to division 3 before I can recruit? or can I start recruiting right away even though they are listed as a D2 player?

3-What is the general minimum amount of effort to get a player considering your school?

4-Ineligible players. Are they worth recruiting? How do you get them to be eligible?

5-If you plan on redshirting someone is it a must to inform them of redshirt?

6-Psych tests and personality tests? Are they important. Personality test looks to be a little expensive for a division 3 school.

7-In Gridiron Dynasty phone calls is a waste of money and generally the experienced coaches use primarily campus visits. Is that the same in HD?

Thanks in advance.

1. It's fairly normal, especially at D3
2. You Basically have to recruit D2 players to be competitive. You can pull down any player that tells you you are a backup option, but if a player blows you off you'll never land him
3. If you promise starts and minutes, you can land a guy for less than $200.
4. No need to worry about ineligible players at D3. Although you have to keep their grades up once they get to campus.
5. No
6. Do not use those!
7. I personally use phone calls to determine whether a recruit can be pulled down or not and then ignore them afterwards. I use mostly SVs and the occasional HV, don't think I've used any CVs

Thanks, Pjbrankin. That was helpful.

Another question. How often are the cycles during recruiting?

3 hours. 2,5, 8, 11 ET

Thanks

I prefer to call the player's coach rather than call the player to see if he can be pulled down. They both tell you the same info (i.e if you can land him, aka pulled down) but the coaching phone call also tells you about the off/def they run. Might be useful if you are trying to decide between 2 similar recruits.

^I actually call both of them. Probably am wasting $10/recruit, but oh well

random question, what happens when you promise minutes or a start to an ineligible player and they end up having to sit out a year?

For your Div II team, you can offer inelg player, and no promises after a year sitting out

You no longer have obligations to the promises if he sits out.

Ineligibles are able to play right away in DIII. They do not sit out their first season. In DII and DI, offering a start and minutes is normally a safe thing to do because the promises only apply to the first season which they usually will sit out. You have to be careful though because sometimes an ineligible player will pass his SAT test and become eligible and if so he will expect you to meet those promises.

1-Recruiting started about 4 hours ago. I noticed zero humans considering players that I have on my watch list. Is that normal? In GD after 1 cycle the lists are full with human coached teams considering players. Yes, it is normal. They will show up soon enough though.

2-As a D3 team can I recruit D2 players? There is hardly any D3 recruits on my search list. Do I need to wait for the player to drop to division 3 before I can recruit? or can I start recruiting right away even though they are listed as a D2 player? You should send any DII player you are interested in a single phone call. If they say you are a backup then you can pull them down. If they do not respond at all or if they say stop calling or something else negative then forget about them. They will never change their minds. If you decide to pull down a player who says you are a backup, you need to send 10 scouting trips. If he still doesn't consider you, send 2-3 more until he does. Obviously that means stay close to home and be aware that a DII school may decide they want him later in recruiting. If you don't want to try the pull down method, you can simply wait and if the player hasn't receved any other attention, you will get an email that indicates he is available to be recruited. At that point, just recruit him normally.

3-What is the general minimum amount of effort to get a player considering your school? I generally spend between $1000-$1500 on DIII recruits. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

4-Ineligible players. Are they worth recruiting? How do you get them to be eligible? In DIII, ineligibles can play right away. Just make sure you give them enough Study Hall minutes to keep them eligible.

5-If you plan on redshirting someone is it a must to inform them of redshirt? Informing them during recruiting will guarantee they will accept the RS with no problem. It is not necessary though as most coaches just put the RS on after they sign. If the player's Work Ethic drops significantly, just take it off and try again. It may take 2-3-4+ tries to get them to take it without too much of a WE drop.

6-Psych tests and personality tests? Are they important. Personality test looks to be a little expensive for a division 3 school. Forget about them. They are useless.

7-In Gridiron Dynasty phone calls is a waste of money and generally the experienced coaches use primarily campus visits. Is that the same in HD? Phone calls are good in the beginning but then Scouting Trips and Home Visits are what works. Sometimes, I offer a Campus Visit (along with other recruiting efforts) on my initial contact with a player especially if I am trying to blast him to keep other coaches off of him. After that, I rarely touch them.
