Is it okay to sign a ineligible player or not.

I'm not sure what your question is. At the DII level, they sit out a year and then they will play 4 seasons as long as you keep their GPA above 2.0. They don't practice, so just put all their minutes into Study Hall.

Yes, but you take the risk that the player will not show up, assuming we are talking about D2 and up. Some say that the chances of the player showing up increases if you spend more money, but I can't confirm or deny that to be honest. It seems mostly random to me, with the player usually showing up, but man it ****** me off when they don't.

forum fact - how much effort you expend on a player affects the odds that a nonqualfier will actually enroll??(metsmax - Hall of Famer - 2:36 PM)

True

I agree wsut, it sucks when they don't report.  I believe you do retain some of the effort you put into him if he shows back up on the recruiting list after a season or two.  I think it is worth the gamble and have gone 3 out of 4 (reporting) in the last several cycles.

Definitely worth the gamble in my opinion.  It's a great way to get a player that some other coaches might shy away from.   Esp. worth the risk if they are high potential players.

Yes it is ok.  At D3 it means nothing (cept they need more study hall than the average bear).

At D2/D1, they eat a roster spot for an extra year and need more SH and might go juco instead of showing up.  So there are some negatives, but if you sign one cheap that is more talented than a comparable eligible, go for it.

Is a highly rated DI recruit more likely to sign w/ a DII school if he's ineligible?
12/8/2010 1:52 PM
garger - my feeling is that he may be more likely to sign, since he will get less attention from DI schools but he might be more likely to go JUCO after signing with a DII school than a lesser rated ineligible.

He was a drop down player from DI and he looked to soon be a fantastic player in the future and so I signed him because I didn't think signing an ineligible player would kill me and my team.
