Little Trade Help for a Newbie Topic

I have been offered a trade and would like a little help on whether or not it is a good deal.  I'm still rather new, so any help would be welcome.

I will be giving up the following two players

(77 OVR, SS) - 75 Health, 82 Durability
Def: Range - 99, Glove 91, Arm Str - 93, Arm Acc - 94
Hitting: Contact - 80, PWR - 66, VsL - 24, VsR - 60, Eye - 50, Speed 53, Baserunning - 94

(82 OVR, RF) - 97 Health, 100 Stamina
Def: Range - 72, Glove - 59, Arm Str - 70, Arm Acc - 62
Hitting: Contact - 43, PWR - 69, VsL - 96, VsR - 68, Eye - 56, Speed - 70, Baserunning - 67

I will get the following two players:

(82 OVR, 2B) - 80 Health, 88 Durability
Def: Range - 75, Glove 81, Arm Str - 79, Arm Acc - 79
Hitting:  Contact - 81, PWR - 71, VsL - 63, VsR - 62, Eye - 68, Speed - 63, Baserunning - 73

(74 OVR, P) - 99 Health, 72 Stamina, 28 Durability
Control - 66, VsL - 65, VsR - 71 - Velocity - 48, GB/FB - 64, P1 - 91, P2 - 78, P3 - 41

Based on my assessment, I am giving up a great glove/average hitting SS and an average OF for a better hitting second baseman and a decent pitcher.  All are still minor leaguers, but will be ready to be called up this season or next.

Thanks in advance!!

Assuming these are current ratings and they are all in their 4th year or later as a pro, you're giving up an excellent SS and a nice utility player who can even start at LF/RF/3B against LHP, for a very good 2B/3B and a nice utility pitcher who doesn't kill you as an SP5. In general I wouldn't do it, because elite defensive SS with a credible bat are a rare commodity, but I can see a team with a solid, affordable major league SS making such a trade.

If these are projected ratings then all bets are off, and if any of these guys are in their third season or earlier as a pro (and therefore have significant development potential) that could sway my opinion a lot.

Thanks for the reply.  I see your point, I actually mentioned the elite defensive SS stance to the guy I'm working this trade with.  I was trying to get another player added.

The ratings above are projected.  I'll put the current ratings in (below) to see if that changes your thoughts.  The two guys I would give up are pretty well developed.  The two I am getting are younger.  I'm not overly concerned about their development, but may be wrong.  For instance, the 2B glove went from 58 last season to 66 this season and his Arm Acc went from 56 to 65.  However, I don't think I'm good enough to know if there are major red flags here.  Again, any help would be wonderful!!

(77 OVR, SS) - 75 Health, 82 Durability (26 years old, 5th year as Pro)
Def: Range - 99(97), Glove 91(87), Arm Str - 93(88), Arm Acc - 94(87)
Hitting: Contact - 80(75), PWR - 66(66), VsL - 24(24), VsR - 60(55), Eye - 50(47), Speed 53(52), Baserunning - 94(87)

(82 OVR, RF) - 97 Health, 100 Stamina (23 years old, 5th year as Pro)
Def: Range - 72(72), Glove - 59(57), Arm Str - 70(70), Arm Acc - 62(62)
Hitting: Contact - 43(39), PWR - 69(68), VsL - 96(91), VsR - 68(66), Eye - 56(56), Speed - 70(70), Baserunning - 67(67)

I will get the following two players:

(82 OVR, 2B) - 80 Health, 88 Durability (23 years old, 3rd year as Pro)
Def: Range - 75(70), Glove 81(66), Arm Str - 79(73), Arm Acc - 79(65)
Hitting:  Contact - 81(75), PWR - 71(70), VsL - 63(57), VsR - 62(57), Eye - 68(60), Speed - 63(60), Baserunning - 73(65)

I wouldn't do it. The only player in this trade who really has anything special is the SS (his excellent defensive ability). The "2B" you're getting would be a defensive liability at 2B; he would have a good bat for the position but would commit a lot of "minus" plays. I would prefer to play a guy like that in a corner OF spot (in which case he'd be good defensively and average hitting). The pitcher you're getting and the RF you're giving up are both nothing special IMO.

I wouldn't give up the SS for that deal.

Only the SS is worth a whole lot.  The others (with their current ratings, at least) aren't special.  The pitcher you're getting back isn't bad, but he's no ace.

All but the 2B are pretty much what they're going to be, but even a 3rd year pro isn't going to jump anywhere near 15 points in glove.  He'll never be a very good 2B, imo.

What is your Adv. Scouting budget?  I'm guessing 12-14?

My Adv. Scouting Budget is actually 18M, so I would guess the numbers are pretty accurate.  Thanks for all of the advice.  I originally tried to get another player as part of the deal, a pretty good DH that I think might tip the scales in my direction.  I'll see if he is interested in renegotiating.

No, don't do this.  The most important teaching point here is that your projections are not helpful; almost all of these guys are esentially at the end of their development, although the 3B (not 2B) might have a little something left if he's a college draftee (as opposed to an international; they're always just about peaked by 23).

This is a solid ML SS and a decent 4-corner bench player (maybe platoon starter against lefties if he bats right) for a mediocre 3B and a mopup.  If the 3B is a college draftee he might end up being a decent 3B, but I'd probably just bail out of this framework.

I wouldn't do this, with or without that DH. The SS is very good, if not great, but all the other players are non-tender types (i.e., freely available for a couple million bucks or less in FA).

Thanks to everyone for the responses.  I am actually feeling better about my SS than I did before.  I always thought of him as a good defensive SS that could be an averge, if not below average, hitter.  My other guy is a left handed hitter.  Weird that a lefty hits left handed pitchers so well.  I guess I never really thought of that side.  Dedelman, you mentioned that he could platoon against lefties if he bats right.  Why wouldn't he be as good of a hitter if he bats left?

The key piece of info that you need to learn out of this is that any SS that actually meets or exceeds the defensive averages for the position (80/85/85/85) AND has any bit of skill to hit ML pitching is a rare and valuable commodity. Obviously, your guy is not going to be winning any silver sluggers, but he is not an automatic out and has definite gold glove potential with that range.

The average LHP has a much better vs.L than Vs.R.  So your guy would be at a relative disadvantage against LHP if he batted L.  He'd be a better overall hitter, but he would not have a single key skill, because his strength (vsL) would be matched up against most LHPs strength (VsL).

More good info.  Thanks again for all of the responses.  Now I like my 82 overall rated outfielder even less.  Great!!!

I actually like the OF more because he is a lefty with the opposite splits.  He's 91 against lefties.  The average lefty split pitcher split is probably under 70, so he should handle them fine.  Plus, his platoon advantage vs. RHP makes his 66 split fine.  I wouldn't expect great things, but he could definitely be a full time starter, whereas if he was a righty with those splits his usefulness is limited.

Best advice for a newbie on trades is this.
1) If you want to trade a player post it in the league chat (Not the trade block only since many owners never look there) that you are willing to trade him and evaluate what kind of offers you get.

2) If someone offers you a trade without you posting the player in the league chat tell them you may think about making the trade but first you want to post the player in the league chat to see what others may be willing to offer. If they are making you a fair offer they should have no problem with you doing that.
