D1 Recruiting with D- Prestige Topic

I just took over a division 1 school with D- prestige and was wondering what are the limits to my recruiting? What is the realistic player ratings range I should be looking at? 530-570?

I have a lot of money from open scholarships so my last question is should I try to avoid recruiting battles as much as possible?

I'd just go for guys with good potentials.  I'm not even sure you could get a 1 star guy, I've never recruited with prestige that low before.  Just know that you can easily beat any D2.  And if you do battle anyone, make sure you're not at too much of a disadvantage with prestige or distance.

Actually, you can lose battles to DII schools with high prestige who are REALLY, REALLY into a player you're going after.  I currently have had two seasons of recruiting with D- prestige at DI under my belt, and I have to say you'll be lucky to sign a 1 star player, and a 2 star player is a major reach (but not an impossibility).  Go for the guys with good potential.  Look for guys with solid cores but low durability.  Be willing to take some sacrifices (take a big with 80 ath, 70 reb [high potential], 70 blk [high potential], but 30 per [average potential].  You don't need to necessarily avoid battles with other low tier DI schools (I beat out a C prestige DI school to sign one of my most recent players), but NEVER battle with a team from a power conference unless they have equally terrible prestige.  Knocking off sims isn't all that hard to do either, but just be weary.

UTILIZE FSS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.  Focus on players with high potential, and make sure your list is nice and long, because some of your targets are bound to get gobbled up by higher prestige schools.  Never give up on your best targets though, because it's possible an elite school has him on their list as a backup option.  The second they drop him, he could become fair game, and you could potentially land a gem.  

Recruiting with D- prestige is tough, but you can certainly still gather a solid class if you're careful and smart.

Great advice guys....So is the 1 star attached with a player a huge factor in recruiting even if there is a player the same caliber without the star?

Stars really mean nothing.  just go with your gut and look at a player's core ratings.  The higher the stars the better the player, IN SOME CASES.  There aren't even that many one star players to begin with, so just go after whoever looks good.  Look for players who might not be all-stars, but still look good enough to play right away, or at least play a key backup role right away.

But also look for project players; players with high potential across the board who aren't so great right now and maybe look more like a high-end DII prospect.  Sometimes players like that can bang dividends by their senior year. 

Just go after the good-looking players, stars are just window dressing.

ignore total ratings

focus on finding guys with strong potential in at least of the skills you need

look for guys who are IMPERFECT (so higher prestige teams wont want them) but who can contribute - a big man who cant shoot worth a lick, a shooter who aint much on defense but who can light it up off the bench for 15 mins a game, a guy who starts out with mediocre ratings but in 3 or 4 years will be very good - put together a bunch like that, get their IQs up and you'll beat teams filled with one and two star players that have weak core potentials and have plenty of points in skillzzz that are not all that important

D level recruiting sucks......Just thought I would add that one....I can do nothing with my stinky school Radford.

As a coach who likes rebuilding projects, I'd just add that your goal early on is to dominate your small conference and get to the NT to build up resume and prestige. So look at your conference and if it has 1-2 coach owned teams in it that are the winners, build your team to beat them. Don't worry about that NT title yet.
