I know this is a pretty basic question, and I'm sorry, couldn't find the answer anywhere. If I release a player before the end of the season and he has multiple years on his contract, how much of it am I going to have to continue paying? I believe he has 2 seasons left after this one.

All of it, except for maybe the league minimum if he is signed by someone else, IIRC.  Might as well send him to your minors if he clears waivers.
