Redshirt an academic non-qualifier as a sophmore Topic

I had an academic non-qualifier sit out his freshman year, and now he's a sophomore and I am considering redshirting him.  Assuming his GPA is good, will he still maintain 4 years of eligibility, meaning he would be enrolled for 6 years?  I have the option to redshirt but I don't want to waste it.  Thanks

I'm almost positive he can't take a redshirt, but I guess I could be wrong.

system wont allow it. if you try it'll say something like players only have 5 seasons to fulfill eligibility...

I didn't think so, but there's a link to redshirt him.  Why wouldn't they take away that option?

I tried it and the reponse I got was this:
Your request to redshirt this player has been denied. You can not redshirt a non-qualifier. Players have 5 calendar years to complete 4 years of eligibility.

You can do it at D3 however.  It's because ineligibles play right away.
