Starter or Reliever? Topic

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Polin Batista

I'm up in the air on this guy. His durability to me suggests a starter but would he be better suited in setup or long? I would like to use him as a starter but don't want him to wreck my pen.

Reliever.  Yes, he'll rebound quickly from his big fatigue drops on 75 pitch outings-- but in-game fatigue will reduce his effectiveness during those outings.

I like to put a decimal in between the pitchers stamina, and relate it to innings a game.  A 65 stamina would = 6.5 innings a game, a 85 stamina = 8.5 innings and so forth....

So your 49 stamina is completely out of the question.  Starting any pitchers with less than a 65 stamina will really wreck the bullpen--- this is from experience.

No it won't.  Also from experience.

That guy is good enough to give you 5 every game.  35 starts, 5 innings, 175 IP.  Smell like a starter.   But you do have to have the proper staff because he's not giving you 7-8 innings so you have to know he's going to use the bullpen.   Put him between two big inning SP and he's a SP.   Build a bullpen that needs 7 from every starter and you've got a problem.

What would you recommend his pitch count, max and pull setting be if I use him as a SP?

I would be dubious about 5IP per game. I would never consider him a starter, but i would defer to those who do use similar players that way.

This is really pretty simple. He can throw 60 pitches without having in game fatigue, and he can do that every fourth game. Doesn't matter whether you start him or use him as a reliever.

This is misleading - players experience in-game fatigue well before they reach their stamina number.

Here's how I see this pitcher:

His splits, control and pitches tell me he's going to be effective.  The average number of pitches per inning, for all teams, is generally somewhere between 15-16.  He's better than average.    65-70 pitches should get him thru 5 innings.  I'd probably start him at 60-70 and, if he's getting smacked around at the end of his starts, I'd lower it.   If I find that he's only giving me 4 innings, I probably tandem him up but I still use him as a starter.   I'd want max inning from him because I probably don't have anyone that good.   Setting him at SUA or LRA will allow SIMMY to decide when he pitches.  I want to decide.
