The Minnesota Schedule Project Topic

I originally posted this question in the Big Ten coaches' corner and on the Hoops Dynasty board:

"I thought it might be fun to schedule one game against everybody in Division I while I am at Minnesota (Allen). My question is, is there any way I can determine which teams Minnesota has already played? I really don't want to devote 32 full seasons to my fun project!"

Well, nobody answered. Apparently there is no method. So I sent a ticket to CS, and they surprised me with a very nice response ... a list of the 205 teams Minnesota has played in its 46 seasons.

Since there are 324 teams, that leaves 119 to go, or roughly 12 seasons. The trick is going to be doing this without killing my SOS. For that, see the next post.

This is the distribution of prestige in Allen, season 46:
A+: 12
A: 7
A-: 9
B+: 11
B: 13
B-: 23
C+: 24
C: 42
C-: 28
D+: 48
D: 52
D-: 55

What does all this mean? It means that 77 percent of the teams are at C+ or worse prestige, only 23 percent at B- or better. Nearly half of the teams (48 percent) are in the "D" range. While this affects my scheduling strategy, I think it may also confirm what has been recently discussed throughout HD. The new recruit distribution is driving coaches out of the mid-majors, leaving the "middle class" all but vacant and resulting in an inordinate percentage of SIM-coached teams at the D1 level. As the prestige of formerly human-coached teams drops, I suspect the prestige distribution may become even more lopsided.

Having said all that, Wisconsin (incredibly) has the No. 1 SOS in Division I ... and played 10 SIM teams. So, it can be done.

Cool idea tribe.  It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Just a thought on the "vacant" middle class.  There is less talent, for sure, but I think the SIMS have gotten more aggressive in targeting the talent that is available.  Low prestige SIM teams using the 200 mile advantage are poaching good players thousands of miles away.  This makes recruiting as a mid-major much more difficult.  I just made a geographical switch by moving from Long Island to Purdue, so that may explain what I'm seeing, but anyway.  I'll ask around.

Yeah, definitely an interesting idea, Tribe.  I'd imagine there's some pretty solid teams that Minnesota hasn't played as well.  What Big 6 conf teams do you have left?

The powerhouses I have yet to play include Dayton, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, West Va., Cal, Fresno St., Oregon St., Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee. That's 11 out of 117, so that will help balance things. Bottom line, I'll just have to be selective with my SIM opponents and schedule them when they have more veteran rosters.

Well, the next coach at Minnesota will have to take over the Schedule Project. I am going to retire from HD, at least temporarily, at the conclusion of the upcoming season.
I have no beef with the game or anyone associated with it. My reasons are strictly personal, and probably somewhat typical:
1. I have taken on additional job responsibilities and find my spare time to be at a premium.
2. I am getting too old to be up recruiting at 2:45 a.m.
3. I devote way too much thought time to HD. My pastor was preaching a pretty good sermon a few Sundays ago and I was sitting there wondering whether I should throw a slowdown/minus-5 at jslot.
4. My career has been a string of good, but not great, teams. I don't think I will able to take a team to the elite level consistently. I read posts from Iguana, cheez, girt, etc., that boggle my mind. I will never be that smart.
5. If I do come back, it will probably be at D-3. I only spent one season there and I do have an experiment I would like to try someday.
6. I have been thinking about hanging it up for a while. I would have done so after this season, but I didn't want to leave the next Gophers coach with five SIM recruits.
That is all. It has been great fun. Thanks for helping make this an enjoyable gaming experience for me. See you later, maybe?

tribe - honestly can say you're one of the best guys to coach against in Allen.  And I would have been particularly sour had you thrown the -5 at me.

Godspeed.

Wish you the best of luck tribe, didn't get to go against you on many occasions but you definitely have made the Golden Gophers a formidable opponent.  The Big Ten will be losing a good one.
