is going from 2 minutes to 22 minutes enough to go from 1.7(midterm) to 2.0(final)?

it should be, but some time you just get a brick headed son of a ***** who will flunk out anyway.

he has always had good grades and had a 3.1 first semester, so I reduced his minutes from 5(i think) to 2. big mistake.

Vanderbilt my ***.

I just had a freshman with a 1.9 at mid-term, and 22 minutes of SH didn't help him a bit. :(

I'm thinking "box of hair".

The change of major is the culprit.   'Hooked on Phonics' is tougher than it sounds. The first semester, "Letters A-C" isn't too bad. But  they add another vowel for the 2nd semester and that's the downfall of many basketball players

block head RS FR went from 3.5 while on RS to 1.9 at mid-term. 15 mins of SH did not pull him out of his academic dive. Now that he is ineligible, maybe 85 mins of SH will focus him in time for conf tourney.

When I read up on assigning practice minutes, the FAQ indicated that any more than 20 wasn't effective.

Is that true?  I was even reluctant to give my flunkee 22.

I think its like any other category and the law of diminishing returns applies once you get up into the 20s and higher.

Once a player is ineligible though, I don't think he can improve in any other areas, so there's no "down" side to throwing all those minutes into study hall.

Personally, I've never gone higher than 20 minutes in study hall with a kid and only had one really that I questioned if he'd make the 2.0 after his midterm returned a juicy 1.4 GPA (and since he was a soph playing spot minutes, I really wasn't concerned if he flunked out of Rocks for Jocks...). The increase from 10 to 20 was enough to slide him in with a 2.0 at finals .

That's a good point about him not improving while he's ineligible.  I wasn't aware of that.

This guy of mine was recruited as a project at PG, and not really getting many minutes just now - probably wouldn't for a couple of seasons, until my big junior class graduates.  So it didn't set me back any, but I learned from this that some kids just aren't going to do well in school no matter what.

I've been using this formula for study hall that I found on some post on this board.  Up until now, it's worked great.  This is the first time I've had a problem with eligibility:

* Freshman: 4.0 - HS GPA x 10
* Sophomore: 3.6 - GPA x 10
* Junior: 3.2 - GPA x 10
* Senior: 2.8 - GPA x 10

Yeah, that's the same formula I've used without hassle. If they come back yellow or red at midterms (2.4 GPA or less), I take whatever the formula gives, round it up to the nearest multiple of 5 and add 5 minutes to that, so a kid getting 12 minutes would get 20 until the next set of grades comes out. So far it's served me well.

I don't use any formula I just give everyone 10min of SH and since I've been doing that which is maybe around 75 total seasons ago I have had no issues at all. But I'm sure some of that has been luck.

you are "wasting" minutes that could go to improving categories though that way...

I have a couple of seniors with 3.5 or so gpas - they're getting by on 0 to 2 minutes.  Those extra minutes are put to use in something that will make the player better.

hold on there guys. a new recruit who is ineligible does not improve. a guy who was eligible though, who becomes ineligible, absolute does improve (and will lose points if you put everything at 0).

also, for recruited ineligibles, i believe practice time does not matter - it totally does not matter what you do with his minutes. to hedge against that not being true, i put all my minutes in SH, and would recommend the same to anybody else - what can it hurt? but you definitely don't want to go all SH for a guy who becomes ineligible due to grades.
