what drives FTA ? Topic

What theories do folks have on what drives FTA - especially for PG SG and SF?

I tend to think the extent to which the guy takes it inside matters - compared to how often he shoots threes

IQ matters

I think SPD and ATH matter - being a step quicker than the opponent seems to help draw fouls - and it makes sense that it would.

But, has anyone thought systematically about this?

how often he shoots inside. players that shoot alot of 3s do not go to the line. players that are set to -2 will go to the line alot more.

i would hope this is obvious but it wasn't mentioned in the inital post...

Bow, do you think as distro increases so does the ratio of FTA? as in if a guy gets 10% of the shots and he goes to line an average of 5 times a game, do you think if you upped the distro so that he took 20% of the shots his FTA would increase in a linear fashion and go to 10 FTA per game, or do you think the FTA would be higher than that. Also, does ATH really play that big of a role? It's my understanding that ATH will influence a players ability to finish in traffic, but does it affect the players ability to actually get shots in traffic??

i would say that athleticism would contribute to a players ability to get a shot off in traffic.

i don't think the ratio of free throw attempts per shot changes necessarily as a player takes more shots, but the more  you raise a players distro the more touches they have and the more likely they are to get fouled...and obviously late in the half or game players who have the ball in their hands can pick up a ton of foul shots once their team is in the bonus

Which style of defense being faced matters. Oh, and if it's playing a (-) minus defense too.

Edit: And late in game if the defense is tired helps getting to the line.
