Arbitration versus Long term contract Topic

I have a great 27 year old player asking 2.3M in arbitration or I can re-sign him now for 5 years/9M per year/$45 M total.  I personally think he is worth it at this price but want some more opinions.  Should I ride out the arbitration options as long as I can or re-sign him now for 5 years?

I'd arb him twice, and then sign him LT.  Since he's 27 already, his ratings (and therefore his salary demands) shouldn't increase.  Take advantage of the couple of relatively cheap arb awards.

That guy is a 3B.  74 for glove and arm accuracy is terrible for a SS

That might be why he's playing at 3B right now...

I generally do 2 arb years and then the LT contract with star players - the arb years may not even end up being all that much cheaper than the LT sometimes, but you extend the amount of time you have the player before he hits the open market. I do not believe taking a guy to arb twice is enough to risk him then turning down that first LT contract. As has been pointed out, if a player is pretty much done developing, you don't really risk his LT demands going up in the meantime either - though they should probably work that into the game to some degree.

It's just math.   He'll want 4-6m next season.  Do you want him at age 32 at 11-12m?   Or age 31 at 9m?   It really depends on your current salary situation and where you think you'll be in 4-5 seasons.
