Moving up the ladder! Topic

I'm thinking about moving up to a low D1 school from my DII school right now (if it will let me). I was wondering would I be better off going to a D1 school right now or building up my DII school and then going. I know my teams haven't been that good yet, but that's because I haven't had a chance to build them up yet. Thanks for the help.

Build up and get experience. The game is only going to get harder in D1

Good point, if I get a good DII team, can I jump to a good D1 school ya think?

You can jump from D2 to a MVC/MAC/CUSA/WCC type school for sure.

You can go to most A10 schools as well, and maybe if you are very successful at D2 you can get a low Power 6 team that has a C- prestige.

So if I did jump to a low conference school lets say, is there a good chance I could build a power and win the tourney if I know what i'm doing, or does somebody else most likely already have a powerhouse team beating up on the cupcakes.

Win the conference tourney or the NT?  Conference tourney in a small conference is probably achievable fairly quickly if you pick carefully.  NT would be borderline impossible at a small school with no D1 experience and minimal overall experience.

hahaha yeah of cource conference tourney, I was just wondering if people coached at small schools at each small conference and just beat up on the compeitiion.

Yes, it happens all the time. It is especially helpful to do so for new D1 coachs before jumping into a power conference where recruiting can be tough. You get a taste of it in the low/mid-major conferences, so you can begin to figure it out, but you margin of error is much wider if you are in those lower conferences with only a few human coachs. Jumping to a low end BCS conference (which would take some pretty decent success at D2) is not something I'd recommend to a new coach to D1. They are going to be on the low end of the recruiting totem pole against some monster teams, a guarenteed losing proposition for a new guy. You are much better off getting "easy" training and success in a lower conference then jumping to a better mid-range BCS school. If you get enough experience under your belt, go for the big jump if you are up to it.

If you build a truly elite D2 team, you can jump to a BIg 6 school.

technically true - but not many of them. I think I've built a fairly elite D II team at Valdosta St in Knight. Our recent run is 7 straight NT appearances including 3 sweet 16s and 2 championship game appearances. There are currently 5 BCS jobs open in Knight, and I am qualified only for 1 of them - Hawaii.

ETA: those are the only 4 jobs I'm not qualified for though...

I just watched jbohrman jump to B- Pitt in Wooden.  I know what you're saying, but I'm talking about truly elite, not a couple of years elite.

I've been a longshot to jump from DII to UNC.

dac, when we just made our recent move in Rupp, I was qualified for all jobs except A+ IL, including Duke, UConn and others. (Duke and UConn were down in that world, but still.)
